Iranian official calls IAEA inspectors ‘roaches,’ says Tehran should quit NPT

(Worthy News) – The head of an Iranian academic institute that conducts nuclear research has called for the Islamic Republic to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and renegotiate the 2015 nuclear deal, and repeatedly dubbed international nuclear inspectors “cockroaches.”

In an Iranian Channel 2 television interview translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute monitoring group, Mohammad-Javad Larijani, who heads the Institute for Research and Fundamental Sciences, criticized Iran’s membership in the NPT, the international treaty aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.

“It wouldn’t be a bad idea for us to suspend our commitment in the wake of all this pressure and renegotiate it from the beginning,” Larijani said in the interview broadcast June 12. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Torrential Rain Leaves U.S. Midwest Vegetable Farmers Struggling With No Aid in Sight

(Worthy News) – Like farmers throughout the Midwest, this spring’s torrential rains turned Andrew Dunham’s land into sticky muck that set him back nearly a month in planting his crops.

Unlike other farmers, though, Dunham won’t get a piece of a $16 billion aid package to offset his losses and he can’t fall back on federally subsidized crop insurance because he grows herbs, flowers and dozens of vegetable varieties, but not the region’s dominant crops of corn and soybeans.

“There are no federal bailouts for vegetable farmers,” said Dunham, who owns an 80-acre (32-hectare) organic farm with his wife near Grinnell, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Des Moines, and is enduring weeks without sales as his crops ripen. “We’ll just miss out on three weeks of income.” [ Source: TIME (Read More…) ]

It’s Not Just Corn, U.S. Farmers May Forgo Near-Record Soy Acres

(Worthy News) – American farmers, already set to leave a record number of acres without corn, now face the prospect of also failing to plant soybeans because of rampant rainfall.

Growers are expected to file insurance claims on 2.2 million unplanted soybeans acres, or about 890,000 hectares, according to the average estimate among analysts. While some farmers still have time to plant, the estimate would be just below the record of 2.23 million acres that couldn’t be plant with soy in 2015.

The wettest 12 months on record have already prompted the U.S. Department of Agriculture to scale back its domestic corn harvest estimate earlier in the year than normal. The agency has signaled it may lower its estimate for American soybean in a report due July 11. [ Source: Bloomberg (Read More…) ]
