Supreme Court delivers blow to Trump administration in census case

(Worthy News) – The Supreme Court on Thursday sent the case involving the Trump administration’s efforts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census back to the lower court for further proceedings in a loss for the Trump administration.

In its ruling, delivered by Chief Justice John Roberts, the high court said there is a “significant mismatch” between Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’s decision for adding the citizenship question and the rationale — that asking about citizenship would ensure better enforcement of the Voting Rights Act — he provided. The court blocked the administration from including the citizenship question on the census for now, but did not rule out the possibility of the Trump administration providing an adequate justification for doing so.

“Altogether, the evidence tells a story that does not match the secretary’s explanation for his decision,” Roberts wrote. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

US gets no commitment from NATO for help on Iran threat

(Worthy News) – NATO allies gave the U.S. no firm commitments that they will participate in a global effort to secure international waterways against threats from Iran, acting Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday, wrapping up his first alliance meeting.

Esper said the U.S. will come back next month and provide reluctant allies more details on exactly how the Iranian threat has escalated in recent months, and how nations can work together to deter further aggression.

“At the end of the day what our ask is here, near term, is to publicly condemn Iran’s bad behavior,” Esper said as he prepared to leave Brussels. “And in the meantime, in order to avoid a military escalation, help us maintain the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in the Persian Gulf and wherever.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

After US-Russia summit, Netanyahu says Israel won’t stop hitting Iran in Syria

(Worthy News) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday vowed to continue to act against Iranian entrenchment in Syria, days after a high-level trilateral meeting with the US and Russia.

Netanyahu also warned that an Israeli retreat from the Jordan Valley in the West Bank would lead to war, speaking at a ceremony for pilots graduating from the Israeli Air Force’s 178th flight school training program.

“We will continue to act against Iran’s attempt to establish itself in Syria, with the air force having a central role,” Netanyahu told the new pilots. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Trump’s latest Iran sanctions target $200B economic empire of supreme leader

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration’s latest sanctions against Iran reinstate an embargo on some of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s front companies that President Barack Obama lifted as part of the nuclear deal and could further expose the Iranian dictator’s corrupt economic empire.

Khamenei oversees a vast network of corporate and financial assets worth $200 billion, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies estimates. Trump signed an executive order this week giving the Treasury Department broad powers to sanction Khamenei, those tied to him, and anyone doing business with him.

“Today’s actions follow a series of aggressive behaviors by the Iranian regime in recent weeks, including shooting down of U.S. drones,” Trump said Monday. “The supreme leader of Iran is one who ultimately is responsible of the hostile conduct of the regime. He’s respected within his country. His office oversees the regime’s most brutal instruments including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

House sends Trump border aid bill after Pelosi caves to pressure from moderates

(Worthy News) – The House on Thursday passed a bipartisan Senate bill that would address the crisis at the southern border, dealing a major blow to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and progressives who had pushed for stronger protections for migrant children.

Ninety-five Democrats opposed the measure in a 305-102 vote. The legislation now heads to the White House, where President Trump is expected to sign the $4.6 billion package into law.

Pelosi and her leadership team had initially intended to hold a Thursday vote to amend the Senate-passed bill to include language that would implement safety and care standards for law enforcers working with migrants — provisions pursued by liberals that were in the previous House-passed bill.

But moderate Democrats in groups like the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and the Blue Dog Coalition put pressure on Pelosi to take up the Senate bill immediately. [ Source: The Hill (Read More…) ]
