Ancient Galilee church unearthed, said to be home to apostles Peter and Andrew

(Worthy News) – Excavations in Israel’s Galilee have uncovered remains of an ancient church said to mark the home of the apostles Peter and Andrew, the dig’s archaeological director said Friday.

Mordechai Aviam of Kinneret Academic College, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, said this season’s dig at nearby El-Araj confirmed it as the site of Bethsaida, a fishing village where Peter and his brother Andrew were born according to the Gospel of John.

The Byzantine church was found near remnants of a Roman-era settlement, matching the location of Bethsaida as described by the first century AD Roman historian Flavius Josephus, Aviam said. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Pentagon sees high risk of ‘unintended conflict’ with Iran

(Worthy News) – U.S. military officials see a high risk of “unintended conflict” with Iran due to rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, according to top Pentagon official.

“The potential for miscalculation is high,” John Rood, the undersecretary of defense for policy, said at the Aspen Security Forum. “This kind of friction in a small waterway starts to increase the possibility of unintended conflict.”

Britain calls ship seizure ‘hostile act’ as Iran releases video of capture

(Worthy News) – Britain on Saturday denounced Iran’s seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf as a “hostile act” and rejected Tehran’s explanation that it seized the vessel because it had been involved in an accident.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards posted a video online showing speedboats pulling alongside the Stena Impero tanker, its name clearly visible. Troops wearing ski masks and carrying machine guns rappelled to its deck from a helicopter, the same tactics used by British Royal Marines to seize an Iranian tanker off the coast of Gibraltar two weeks ago.

Friday’s action in the global oil trade’s most important waterway has been viewed in the West as a major escalation after three months of confrontation that has already taken Iran and the United States to the brink of war. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia pressuring US to delay rollout of peace plan

(Worthy News) – Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan are pressuring the US to hold off on announcing US President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century” peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians, according to a report in the London-based pan-Arabic Asharq Al-Awsat that quoted a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeineh.

Rudeineh also told reports that the rift between the Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank was the result of a split in Arab funds, and argued that the split was intentional.

Touching on the possibility of intra-Palestinian reconciliation, Rudeineh said that there was agreement on holding an election, but that Ramallah was waiting to receive written confirmation from Hamas that the elected government would have freedom of action in Gaza after the election. Trump has not built a single mile of new border fence after 30 months in office

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration has not installed a single mile of new wall in a previously fenceless part of the U.S.-Mexico border in the 30 months since President Trump assumed office, despite his campaign promise to construct a “big beautiful wall.”

In a statement last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the federal agency overseeing border barrier construction, confirmed that all the fencing completed since Trump took office is “in place of dilapidated designs” because the existing fence was in need of replacement.

The agency said that it had built 51 miles of steel bollard fence with funding that was set aside during fiscal 2017 and 2018. But while the funding was meant both to replace outdated walls and to place barriers where there previously had been none, the government has only completed the replacement projects. The projects to secure areas with no fence are still in the works. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]
