Hong Kong protests condemned by China as ‘horrendous’ as state media calls on ‘forceful’ action to end unrest

(Worthy News) – Another weekend of violent clashes between protestors and police in Hong Kong spurred officials in China on Monday to blame Western forces for the strife — while also calling for authorities to take more “forceful” action to restore order in the city.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets for the second night in a row to drive back protestors blocking Hong Kong streets on Sunday night, as the protests in the Chinese territory continue to escalate. Protesters had occupied two areas at opposite ends of central Hong Kong on Sunday following a mid-afternoon rally against police use of tear gas at a demonstration the previous weekend. (Worthy News) – Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny remained hospitalized for a second day on Monday after his physician said he may have been poisoned.

West Bank settler wines ‘not made in Israel’ Canadian federal court rules

(Worthy News) – Wines produced by West Bank settlers cannot be labeled “Products of Israel,” Canada’s Federal Court ruled on Monday.

“All of the parties and interveners agree that the settlements… in this case are not part of the State of Israel. Consequently, labeling the settlement wines as ‘Products of Israel’ is both inaccurate and misleading,” the court said in its judgment. “Canadian federal legislation requires that food products [including wines] that are sold in Canada bear truthful, non-deceptive and non-misleading country of origin labels,” it said.

The court explained that labeling the wines produced in Judea and Samaria as “Products of Israel” contravenes both subsection 7(1) of the Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act and subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act [129], and was therefore not defensible under Canadian law. It added that the initial decision by the Complaints and Appeals Office of Canada’s Food Inspection Agency, which allowed those wines to be labeled “Products of Israel,” was unreasonable. Egypt, Jordan leaders hold talks over Israeli-Palestinian peace

(Worthy News) – Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II met on Monday to discuss efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, reaffirming their support for a two-state solution, Sissi’s office said.

The meeting comes ahead of an expected visit to the region by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner, who is pushing a controversial peace plan that has been rejected by the Palestinians and criticized by Jordan.

Kushner’s initiative, partially unveiled at a Bahrain conference in June, dangled the prospect of pumping $50 billion-worth of investment into the stagnant Palestinian economy. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Trump administration, Democrats make progress on new NAFTA

(Worthy News) – Congressional Democrats appear to be moving from “no way” to “maybe” on President Donald Trump’s rewrite of a trade pact with Canada and Mexico.

House Democrats have met four times with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, most recently on Friday, and both sides say they are making progress toward a deal that would clear the way for Congress to approve Trump’s U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, who heads a House subcommittee on trade, declared a couple of months ago that there was “no way” Democrats and the administration could bridge their differences. Lately, he’s reconsidered. “In the course of the last two months, we have seen significant progress,” Blumenauer said. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Leaked UN report blasts UNRWA leadership as corrupt

(Worthy News) – An “inner circle” at the top of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is being accused of abusing authority for their personal gain, a confidential report from the United Nations office of ethics that was leaked to the Qatari Al Jazeera network claims.

According to Al Jazeera, the 10-page report alleges that the UNRWA officials – whom it names at UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl; former Deputy Commissioner-General Sandra Mitchell and Chief of Staff Hakam Shahwan, both of whom left the agency this month; and Maria Mohammedi, senior advisor to Krahenbuhl – were guilty of “abuse of authority for personal gain, to suppress legitimate dissent and to otherwise achieve their personal objectives.” [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

Trump Meets with 20 Pastors at White House to Discuss Inner City Issues

(Worthy News) – Facing growing accusations of racism for his incendiary tweets, President Donald Trump lashed out at his critics Monday and sought to deflect the criticism by labeling Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) as a racist. He also expanded his attacks on the Rev. Al Sharpton, a prominent Cummings defender, who held a press conference in Baltimore to condemn the president.

Trump convened what he called a group of “wonderful inner city Pastors” for an unannounced closed-door meeting to discuss the issues facing the black community Monday.

“This country needs healing. There’s so much division in America along racial lines,” said Bill Owens, president of the Coalition of African American Pastors, who said he was among about 20 pastors who had met with the president.

“He wanted to know from us: What should he do in America? What best can he do?” Owens said of Trump, insisting the gathering “was not damage control.” [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Senate bows to Trump vetoes, allows Saudi arms sales

(Worthy News) – The Senate failed Monday in a bid to override a trio of vetoes issued by President Donald Trump, allowing the administration to move forward with plans to sell billions of dollars of weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump’s decision to sell the weapons in a way that would have bypassed congressional review infuriated lawmakers from both parties. In a bipartisan pushback, Democrats and Republicans banded together to pass resolutions blocking the $8.1 billion weapons sales to the U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf.

Votes to override Trump’s vetoes failed, 45-40, 45-39 and 46-41. A two-thirds vote was needed in each case. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
