Wycliffe Associates Partners with Persecuted Christians to Bring Momentum to Bible Translation

(Worthy News) – Wycliffe Associates is working to accelerate Bible translation in Indonesia, the largest Muslim nation in the world. Christians there face daily persecution, and many are still without the Bible in their language.

Wycliffe Associates provides computer tablets and training to mother-tongue translators around the world, so they can translate the Bible quickly and safely.

“These Bible translators are determined to do everything necessary to share the Scriptures with the people of their language groups,” said Bruce Smith, President and CEO of Wycliffe Associates. “They have waited for generations to experience God’s Word in the language of their hearts. All they need are the tools and the training.”

Wycliffe Associates’ Tablets for National Translators (TNT) initiative provides the national translators with computer tablets loaded with translation software. The translators also have the option of working offline for privacy and security.

“If paper copies of Scripture translations are discovered, they could easily be destroyed. Tablets are absolutely essential,” said Smith. “Whole language groups are still waiting. Our response to their requests will mean committed Christians can translate God’s Word quickly and safely.”

Muslim authorities fund a relocation program in the Papua region of Indonesia, paying people to move more than 2,000 miles in some cases. This has resulted in Christians becoming minorities in their own villages.

“The believers in these areas are standing as strong as they can, but many have no Bibles in their own heart languages,” said Smith. “As you can imagine, they need the encouragement and the wisdom of the Scriptures in a language they can fully understand.”

One language group in Indonesia has had Scripture in their language for more than 25 years. When Muslims tried to establish a presence there, Christians were unfazed, because knowledge of the Bible is now deeply rooted in their community.

The cost of providing a mother-tongue translator with one tablet and training is $300. Wycliffe Associates has received requests for 1,525 Tablets from Papua New Guinea, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.

“They will make any sacrifice, take any risk, to make Bibles available to their people,” said Smith.

To date, Wycliffe Associates has distributed 6,008 TNTs in 67 countries.

Trump promises action on gun violence after two mass shootings

(Worthy News) – President Trump said Sunday he will announce steps to stop gun violence, as top Democrats raced to blame him for fomenting two mass shootings this weekend in Texas and Ohio with a toxic stew of violence and white nationalism, and pressed him for quick action on gun control.

After conferring Sunday with Attorney General William P. Barr, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray, state officials and lawmakers, the president said he will outline his proposals around 10 a.m. Monday.

“We’re going to take care of it,” Mr. Trump told reporters in New Jersey before returning to Washington. “A lot of things are in the works. I’ve spoken to members of Congress about whatever we can do, and a lot of things are being done right now as we speak.”

He suggested that part of his approach will focus on mental health laws and gun ownership. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

US Defense Secretary Wants INF-range Missiles in Asia

(Worthy News) – U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper says he wants to see American ground-based intermediate-range conventional missiles deployed to Asia.

Speaking to reporters on his first international trip as head of the Defense Department, Esper said the weapons were important due to the “the great distances” covered in the Indo-Pacific region.

The United States previously was unable to pursue ground-based missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers because of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a decades-old arms control pact with Russia. Washington withdrew from that pact on Friday, citing years of Russian violations. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]

Turkey to launch offensive in Kurdish-controlled area in northern Syria

(Worthy News) – Turkey will carry out a military operation in a Kurdish-controlled area east of the Euphrates in northern Syria, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday, its third offensive to dislodge Kurdish militia fighters close to its border.

Turkey had in the past warned of carrying out military operations east of the river, but put them on hold after agreeing with the United States to create a safe zone inside Syria’s northeastern border with Turkey that would be cleared of the Kurdish YPG militia.

But Ankara has accused Washington of stalling progress on setting up the safe zone and has demanded it sever its relations with the YPG. The group was Washington’s main ally on the ground in Syria during the battle against Islamic State, but Turkey sees it as a terrorist organization. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Egypt: Sinai will never be part of Trump administration’s peace plan

(Worthy News) – The Sinai Peninsula “will never be part of the ‘opportunity of the century'” peace proposal drawn by the Trump administration, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi told White House envoy Jared Kushner in talks on Thursday, Arab media reported.

Kushner is visiting the region to rally support for the administration’s efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. US President Donald Trump’s administration has not endorsed a two-state solution, which has long been seen internationally as the only viable path to peace.

On Thursday, Egypt issued a statement that el-Sissi had told Kushner that Egypt supported efforts aimed at resolving the conflict “on the basis of a two-state solution and the creation of Palestinian State with east Jerusalem as its capital.” [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

Russian police detain over 800 in opposition crackdown in Moscow

(Worthy News) – Russian police forcibly detained over 800 people attending a protest in Moscow on Saturday to demand free elections, including prominent activist Lyubov Sobol, after authorities warned the demonstration was illegal.

Police removed Sobol, an ally of jailed opposition politician Alexei Navalny, from a taxi and bundled her into a van minutes before the start of what anti-Kremlin activists described as a peaceful walk to protest against the exclusion of their candidates from an election next month.

In another blow to Navalny, Russian investigators opened a criminal investigation into the alleged laundering of 1 billion rubles ($15.3 million) by his anti-corruption foundation. Navalny and his allies say the foundation, which has published a slew of embarrassing investigations into government officials, is transparently financed from public donations. Netanyahu is ‘only nominee for PM,’ Likud candidates pledge

(Worthy News) – With less than two months to go before Israelis vote in the 22nd Knesset, allies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that all Likud candidates should sign a pledge to support him as the next prime minister.

The initiative is meant to secure an advantage for Netanyahu after the Sept. 17 election, when President Reuven Rivlin has to decide who should get the first shot at forming a government. As of Sunday evening, many Likud candidates agreed to sign the pledge, prompting him to go on Twitter to thank them:

“I want to express my gratitude to all my friends in the Likud for this unequivocal support. The Likud is united as ever,” he tweeted. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]
