Democrats accused of fueling attacks on cops, ICE with incendiary political rhetoric

(Worthy News) – From dousing police with water to doxxing immigration agents to attacking detention centers, it’s been a long, hot summer for law enforcement, and the inflammatory political rhetoric on the left isn’t helping.

Four Immigration and Custom Enforcement facilities have come under siege in the last month, most recently the Tuesday shooting at the field office in San Antonio, Texas, as Democrats upped their attacks on the administration’s immigration policies with blasts at “concentration camps,” “Gestapo tactics,” and “children in cages.”

Daniel Bible, ICE San Antonio field office director, was quick to connect the dots, saying the “disturbing public discourse shrouds our critical law enforcement function and unnecessarily puts out officers’ safety at risk.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Florida court overturns ruling that tossed abortion waiting period

(Worthy News) – In a victory for Republican state leaders and abortion opponents, a split appeals court Thursday overturned a circuit judge’s decision that tossed out a 2015 law requiring women to wait 24 hours before having abortions.

The 2-1 decision by a panel of the First District Court of Appeal sends the case back to Leon County circuit court. The 24-hour waiting period case could eventually become a key test for the Florida Supreme Court, which has historically backed abortion rights but is now dominated by conservative justices.

Appeals court Judge Timothy Osterhaus, in a majority opinion Thursday joined by Judge Harvey Jay, pointed to state arguments that a 24-hour waiting period is needed to ensure “informed consent” by women before abortions are provided. [ Source: Miami Herald (Read More…) ]

Missouri abortion law critics won’t seek signatures for vote

(Worthy News) – Critics of a new Missouri law that bans abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy say they won’t make a push to gather the signatures needed to block it pending a public vote, meaning it’s on course to take effect at the end of the month.

Opponents of the law sought a referendum in the hopes that voters would overturn it. But with only two weeks to gather the more than 100,000 voter signatures required to put it on the 2020 ballot, an American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri official says there’s simply not enough time.

“Our push now is to register voters for the 2020 election,” ACLU of Missouri Development Director Nicole Rainey said in a Thursday email. “Like I said – it is impossible to collect signatures within this timeframe.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

US Retail Sales Up Solidly in Sign of Consumer Optimism

(Worthy News) – Americans spent more at retail stores and restaurants in July, a sign that concerns over weakening economic growth and a persistent trade war that has roiled financial markets have yet to dampen consumer confidence.

Retail sales rose a healthy 0.7% last month after a 0.3% gain in June, the Commerce Department said Thursday. Online retailers, grocery stores, clothing retailers and electronics, and appliance stores all reported strong gains.

Consumer spending, the primary driver of the U.S. economy, appears healthy even as other sectors of the economy, such as business investment, have weakened amid growing uncertainty over the U.S.-China trade conflict. Job growth is steady, the unemployment rate is near a 50-year low, and wages are rising modestly, which bolsters Americans’ spending power. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]

Planned Parenthood Says It Will Be Forced to Leave Federal Family-Planning Program Barring Court Intervention

(Worthy News) – Planned Parenthood plans to withdraw next week from Title X, the country’s family-planning program for low-income patients, over a Trump administration rule barring groups who provide abortions or abortion referrals from receiving Title X funds.

The organization on Wednesday asked the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to halt what abortion-rights advocates have dubbed the “domestic gag rule,” while it fights the rule in court. It said that it will otherwise be forced to leave the Title X program on August 19, the Department of Health and Human Services’ deadline for demonstrating “good-faith efforts to comply” with the rule.

The rule states that “none of the funds appropriated for Title X may be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning” and emphasizes that there must be “physical and financial separation” between abortion services and groups receiving funding. North Korea launches 2 more short-range missiles, US official says

(Worthy News) – North Korea fired two more short-range ballistic missiles for the sixth time in three weeks, a U.S. official told Fox News late Thursday.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said earlier that projectiles were twice launched from an area on the North’s eastern coast, but did not say what the weapons were, how many were launched or how far they flew.
