Russia veto puts an end to Syria chemical weapons probe

(Worthy News) – Russia vetoed Tuesday a US-drafted resolution that would have extended by a year an investigation of who is behind chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

It was the ninth time Russia has used its veto power at the Security Council to block action targeting its Syrian ally.

GOP Sen. Jeff Flake won’t seek re-election in 2018

(Worthy News) – U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., facing a tough primary fight, announced Tuesday he will not seek re-election next year — while taking a parting shot on the Senate floor at President Donald Trump for behavior he called “reckless, outrageous, and undignified.”

Without mentioning the president by name, Flake accused the Republican Party of having “given in or given up on the core principles in favor of a more viscerally satisfying anger and resentment … but anger and resentment are not a governing philosophy.”

Flake has had a tumultuous relationship with the Trump administration. In August, he criticized the president’s immigration policy in a New York Times opinion piece. The president tweeted in response that Flake was “WEAK on borders, crime and a non-factor in the Senate.” [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Trey Gowdy targeting James Comey in new Clinton probe

Trey Gowdy targeting James Comey in new Clinton probe

(Worthy News) – Rep. Trey Gowdy plans to grill former FBI Director James Comey about his decision-making as part of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s decision to re-examine the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

“Have to, won’t we?” the South Carolina Republican told the Washington Examiner when asked about interviewing Comey.

Gowdy chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has opened a joint investigation with the Judiciary Committee in order to review the Justice Department’s handling of the politically charged investigation. Gowdy is particularly concerned that “the decision to charge or not charge [Clinton] was made before all the witnesses were interviewed,” but he emphasized that the investigation topics are structured in a nonpartisan way. GOP investigates Russian granted US entry by Obama administration while under FBI investigation for bribery

(Worthy News) – The Obama administration awarded a visa allowing a top Russian nuclear executive to enter the United States after the FBI had already gathered substantial evidence he was involved in a racketeering scheme involving bribery, kickbacks, extortion and money laundering, court records show.

The records show TENEX executive Vadim Mikerin was engaged in illegal conduct as early as the fall of 2009, yet he was allowed to enter the country by the Obama administration with a L1 temporary work visa when he arrived in December 2011.

Milkerin’s visa was renewed in August 2014, just months before he was arrested and charged with extortion, the records show. He and his company applied for the visa in summer 2011, records show. [ Source: The Hill (Read More…) ]

Iraq readies for final offensive on Islamic State near Syrian border

(Worthy News) – Iraqi forces are about to launch an offensive to recapture the last patch of Iraqi territory still in the hands of Islamic State, the military said on Wednesday.

“Your security forces are now coming to liberate you,” said leaflets dropped by the Iraqi air force on the western border region of al-Qaim and Rawa, according to a statement from the Joint Operations Command in Baghdad.

The militant group also holds parts of the Syrian side of the border, but the area under their control is shrinking as they retreat in the face of two sets of hostile forces – a U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led coalition and Syrian government troops with foreign Shi‘ite militias backed by Iran and Russia.
