Congress reveals details of huge spending bill — nearly 1,800 pages — ahead of shutdown deadline

(Worthy News) – Congressional negotiators early Thursday released details of the massive spending deal — giving lawmakers less than 24 hours to read it before they’re expected to vote on it.

The bill runs to 1,159 pages, with another 609-page report containing additional instructions to the departments and agencies funded by the deal.

The Senate is expected to vote on the package in the afternoon, with the House to follow later Thursday night. If the Senate voted at 4 p.m., any senator who wanted to be aware of what he or she was voting on would have to digest two pages a minute, with no breaks, up until the vote in order to get through the bill and report. House votes to end U.S. support in Yemen’s civil war

(Worthy News) – The House on Wednesday voted to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen’s civil war, a rebuke of Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s alleged role in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The chamber voted 248-177, with 18 Republicans siding with the Democratic majority.

The Senate approved a matching resolution in December with a vote of 56-41, but that was in the last Congress. The Republican-controlled chamber must vote again in order to force the Trump administration to end its military support of the Saudi coalition. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Innocent Man on Death Row Shares How God Used His False Conviction to Share the Good News

(Worthy News) – For many of us, the very thought of only seeing the sun for an hour a day for 30 years has never crossed our minds – in fact, it would horrify most of us if this actually happened to us.

It had never crossed Anthony Ray Hinton’s mind either, who as a young 29-year-old man had only known living life as a sheltered and marginalized black man, having grown up in the sunbelt of a little small Alabama town outside of Montgomery.

Hinton served 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. He only saw the sun for an hour a day and never knew or even at times believed that he would see the sun as a free man again. [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

U.S. senators to try again to pass Russia sanctions bill

(Worthy News) – A bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced a bill on Wednesday that would impose stiff new sanctions on Russia over its meddling in U.S. elections and aggression against Ukraine, the latest congressional effort to push President Donald Trump to ratchet up Washington’s response to Moscow.

It was introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, as well as other members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It is a tougher version of legislation – dubbed the “sanctions bill from hell” by Graham – the two lawmakers backed last year but which failed to pass.

The new bill, which was first reported by Reuters, may have a better chance of passing Congress now, either as a whole or as amendments to other legislation, in the face of growing bipartisan anger over Russia’s interference in other countries’ affairs. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

New Bible translation technology by Wycliffe spreading Gospel faster than ever before

(Worthy News) – New technology has emerged that will enable quicker translation of the Bible and faster spread of the Gospel, accelerated by indigenous people doing the work of translation.

Wycliffe Bible Translators has recently adapted their translation software, “ParaText,” for smartphones, dubbing it “ParaText Lite,” and has described it as a game-changer in several ways.

ParaText Lite has allowed mobility in countries where technology like laptops and recording equipment, which is hard to access and maintain, has offered an almost universally-accessible central database for collaboration in translation work, and is enabling missionaries with data stored in long-outdated computer models to upload and update their work, all while sidestepping internet limitations. Robert Mueller has spent two years investigating Trump, and he hasn’t said a word. It’s possible he never will.

(Worthy News) – Occasionally, his signature appears on court documents. But on the most consequential days of the nearly two-year investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, the man leading it – Robert Mueller – has been conspicuously absent.

When President Donald Trump’s senior aides and confidants paraded through federal courtrooms to face criminal charges his office had filed, the former FBI director was nowhere to be seen. When some of them came back to court to be convicted, he said nothing.
