EU rejects fresh Brexit negotiations

(Worthy News) – European leaders stood firm late Tuesday after the British parliament voted to send Prime Minister Theresa May back to Brussels to renegotiate the EU-backed withdrawal agreement.

“We continue to urge the UK government to clarify its intentions with respect to the next steps as soon as possible,” said a spokesman for European Council President Donald Tusk. “The backstop is part of the Withdrawal Agreement, and the Withdrawal Agreement is not open for renegotiation.”

Tusk’s spokesman was referring to the Irish border backstop, a measure included in the draft Brexit deal to prevent a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and the UK’s Northern Ireland. [ Source: Deutche Welle (Read More…) ]

US spy agencies doubt North Korea will give up its nukes

(Worthy News) – In an assessment casting doubt on US President Donald Trump’s goal of a nuclear-disarmed North Korea, US intelligence agencies told Congress on Tuesday that the North is unlikely to entirely dismantle its nuclear arsenal.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, in testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, noted that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed support for ridding the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons and has not recently test-fired a nuclear-capable missile or conducted a nuclear test.

“Having said that, we currently assess that North Korea will seek to retain its WMD [weapons of mass destruction] capabilities and is unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capability because its leaders ultimately view nuclear weapons as critical to regime survival,” Coats said in an opening statement. FBI finds no motive for Las Vegas shooting, closes probe

(Worthy News) – The FBI has found no clear motive for the killing of 58 people by a sniper firing down at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas in 2017, the agency said on Tuesday as it closed an investigation into the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

According to an FBI report, the 64-year-old gunman, Stephen Paddock, was not unlike many other mass shooters who are driven by a complex mix of issues, ranging from mental health to stress, and want to die by suicide.

The report also found no evidence that any ideological or political beliefs motivated Paddock, who also wounded more than 800 in the shooting rampage on Oct. 1, 2017. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Iran: Proxies in Lebanon, Gaza will respond with ‘hellfire’ to Israeli attacks

(Worthy News) – Iran will continue supplying high-precision missiles to its proxies in Lebanon and Gaza so they would be able to respond to Israel’s “acts of stupidity with hellfire” said the country’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani on Tuesday.

The remarks come in the wake of a massive aerial bombardment launched by Israel Air Force on Iranian targets in Syria last Monday, which came in response to the surface-to-surface rocket launched at Israeli territory by Iranian Quds Force and intercepted by the Iron Dome a day earlier.

Shamkhani, a close aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also dismissed the success of Israeli military operation meant to expose and destroy the Hezbollah terror tunnels dug along the Israel-Lebanon border. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

A cure for cancer? Israeli scientists say they think they found one

(Worthy News) – A small team of Israeli scientists think they might have found the first complete cure for cancer.

“We believe we will offer in a year’s time a complete cure for cancer,” said Dan Aridor, of a new treatment being developed by his company, Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies Ltd. (AEBi), which was founded in 2000 in the ITEK incubator in the Weizmann Science Park. AEBi developed the SoAP platform, which provides functional leads to very difficult targets.

“Our cancer cure will be effective from day one, will last a duration of a few weeks and will have no or minimal side-effects at a much lower cost than most other treatments on the market,” Aridor said. “Our solution will be both generic and personal.” [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Nearly 900,000 immigration cases outstanding as 82,000 hearings canceled during shutdown

(Worthy News) – A data research group estimates that more than 82,000 immigration hearings were canceled because the judges were furloughed during the partial government shutdown.

Hearings for migrants claiming asylum and others that had been scheduled in front of 385 judges are believed to have been canceled, according to Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a data analysis organization within New York’s Syracuse University.

The data research group counted 42,726 hearings that had been scheduled to take place between Dec. 22, the start of the shutdown, and Jan. 11, but were canceled because no judges were around to decide the cases. The research group said for every week beyond Jan. 11, an estimated 20,000 additional hearings were canceled. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Shutdown costs pegged at $3 billion as government reopens

(Worthy News) – The U.S. economy was expected to lose $3 billion from the partial federal government shutdown over President Donald Trump’s demand for border wall funding, congressional researchers said on Monday as 800,000 federal employees returned to work after 35 days without pay.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the cost of the shutdown would make the U.S. economy 0.02 percent smaller than expected in 2019. More significant effects will be felt by individual businesses and workers, particularly those who scrambled to make ends after not being paid.

Overall, the U.S. economy lost about $11 billion during the five-week period, the CBO said. It expects $8 billion to be recovered, however, as the government reopens and employees receive back pay. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]
