EU to probe Palestinian textbooks for incitement to hatred, violence

(Worthy News) – The European Union will conduct an examination of new Palestinian school textbooks following a study that found them to be more radical than in the past and containing incitement and rejection of peace with Israel.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, confirmed the planned investigation in a statement on the EU website, the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education, or IMPACT-se, said Wednesday.

The development comes after the European Parliament in April 2018 passed legislation geared to prevent hateful content in Palestinian textbooks. In October the parliament’s budgetary committee recommended freezing more than $17 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority over incitement against Israel in its textbooks. Birth rate in U.S. falls to lowest level in 32 years, CDC says

(Worthy News) – The number of babies born in the U.S. in 2018 fell to the lowest level in 32 years, according to a government report released Wednesday.

The numbers are part of a decadeslong trend toward fewer and fewer babies being born each year — which means we’re getting further away from the possibility of having enough children to replace ourselves, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The major finding is that the fertility rates are reaching record lows,” said the report’s lead author, Brady Hamilton, a statistician and demographer at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. “There have been record lows in the teenage birth rate, which fell 7 percent compared to 2017.” [ Source: NBC News (Read More…) ]

India’s evangelicals fear more persecution if Modi is re-elected

Vijayesh Lal, General Secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India, told Spanish website Protestante Digital that the competing parties have carried out a “very vicious campaign”.

Up to 900 million eligible voters have been selecting their representatives since the polls opened on April 11. Modi, a staunch Hindu nationalist, has led the country since 2014 but Indians will have to wait until May 23 to find out whether he has managed to secure his re-election. US orders embassy staff from Iraq over ‘imminent’ Iran threat

(Worthy News) – The United States Wednesday ordered non-emergency staff evacuated from its Baghdad embassy due to an “imminent” threat from Iranian-linked Iraqi militias, but President Donald Trump predicted Iran would “soon” want to start talks.

The move added to growing fears that the long-time rivals could be on course for conflict despite both sides stressing they have no desire for war.

The evacuation order, also covering the US consulate in Arbil, came 10 days after the Pentagon deployed an aircraft carrier task force and B-52 bombers to the Gulf to fend off an unspecified plot by Tehran to attack US forces or allies. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Trump’s Iran moves trigger warnings, demands from Congress

(Worthy News) – Lawmakers from both parties in Congress demanded more information on the White House’s claims of rising threats in the Middle East, warning US President Donald Trump of a dangerous escalation with Iran.

The top leaders in Congress — the so-called Gang of Eight— are to receive a classified briefing from the administration on Thursday. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the White House has resisted a wider presentation for all lawmakers, part of what Democrats say is a pattern of stonewalling. Some Republicans, including Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, sought out their own briefings as the administration called US personnel home from Iraq and sent military might to the Persian Gulf, claiming unspecified threats linked to Iran.
