(Worthy News) – The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood filed a federal lawsuit challenging an Alabama law that effectively outlaws all abortions, the two groups announced Friday.

The lawsuit, filed in federal district court on behalf of abortion providers in the state, argues the “extreme” law is unconstitutional and stands in direct conflict with Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court case that established a woman’s right to an abortion.

(Worthy News) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday his country would defend itself against any potential war that might arise between the U.S. and Iran.

Zarif, speaking in Baghdad alongside Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim, said that Iran would not back down should tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.

(Worthy News) – A federal judge blocked the Mississippi six-week abortion ban that was set to go into effect in July.

U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, an Obama appointee, issued the injunction Friday, writing that the law “prevents a woman’s free choice, which is central to personal dignity and autonomy.”

Reeves previously blocked a law in Mississippi that would have banned abortion past 15 weeks into a pregnancy. While hearing the oral arguments Tuesday, he said the law “smacks of defiance to this court.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Hundreds of rivers around the world from the Thames to the Tigris are awash with dangerously high levels of antibiotics, the largest global study on the subject has found.

Antibiotic pollution is one of the key routes by which bacteria are able develop resistance to the life-saving medicines, rendering them ineffective for human use. “A lot of the resistance genes we see in human pathogens originated from environmental bacteria,” said Prof William Gaze, a microbial ecologist at the University of Exeter who studies antimicrobial resistance but was not involved in the study.

The rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global health emergency that could kill 10 million people by 2050, the UN said last month. [ Source: UK Guardian (Read More…) ]
