US and Russia end weapons pact, sparking fears of new arms race

(Worthy News) – The United States plans to test a new missile in coming weeks that would have been prohibited under a landmark, 32-year-old arms control treaty that the U.S. and Russia ripped up on Friday.

Washington and Moscow walked out of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty that President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed in 1987, raising fears of a new arms race. The U.S. blamed Moscow for the death of the treaty. It said that for years Moscow has been developing and fielding weapons that violate the treaty and threaten the United States and its allies, particularly in Europe.

“Russia is solely responsible for the treaty’s demise,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement released on Friday. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Iran says will take ‘third step’ to reduce nuclear deal commitments

(Worthy News) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday announced that the Islamic Republic intends to take a “third step” to reduce its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement, according to parliamentary news agency ICANA cited by Reuters.

“The third step in reducing commitments to [the nuclear deal] will be implemented in the current situation,” Zarif said, without further clarification of what that might entail.

“We have said that if [the deal] is not completely implemented by others then we will also implement it in the same incomplete manner. And, of course, all of our actions have been within the framework of [the deal],” said Zarif, who had financial sanctions imposed on him by the US on Wednesday, and was reportedly invited to the White House to meet with US President Donald Trump last month. Iran Seizes Third Foreign Ship in Less Than Month

(Worthy News) – Iran seized a foreign oil tanker and its seven crew members in the Persian Gulf last week, state media reported Sunday, the third time the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has detained a ship in less than a month.

The Guards said in a statement that they seized the ship Wednesday night near Farsi Island, north of the Strait of Hormuz. The official news agency IRNA quoted the Guards as saying that the ship was carrying 700,000 liters of smuggled Iranian fuel that had been transferred to it from other ships and were being transported “to Persian Gulf Arab states.”

The reports on the seizure did not say why Iranian fuel would be transferred to other energy-producing Persian Gulf Arab states. But Tehran has been concerned about the smuggling of its top commodity in the wake of United States economic sanctions aimed at cutting its world oil trade. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]
