Kashmir tensions intensify amid India-Pakistan skirmishes

(Worthy News) – Tensions have soared along the volatile, highly militarized frontier between India and Pakistan in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, as India has deployed more troops and ordered thousands of visitors out of the region.

Indian firing Sunday along the Line of Control that separates Kashmir between the archrivals wounded a woman and the ongoing skirmishes spread fear in border villages, Pakistani police said. The frontier residents on the Pakistani side are either moving out to safer places or have begun construction of new bunkers, with some strengthening existing shelters near their homes.

Pakistan and India, which both claim Kashmir in its entirety, routinely blame each other for initiating border skirmishes, but the latest ones come amid the Indian government’s evacuation order of tourists and Hindu pilgrims and a buildup of troops in its part of the region. Trump explores executive action on guns

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump is exploring ways to use regulatory power and executive action to curb gun violence after a pair of deadly shootings over the weekend — a move driven by his aides’ belief that Congress is incapable of coalescing around consensus legislation in a heated 2020 election cycle.

White House officials on Monday said Trump and U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr are “resolved” to take action after the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. The administration is exploring solutions “that actually make an impact,” as opposed to “things that feel good,” one Trump aide said. [ Source: Politico (Read More…) ]

U.S. designates China a currency manipulator, escalating trade war

(Worthy News) – A yearlong U.S.-China trade war boiled over on Monday as Washington accused Beijing of manipulating its currency after China let the yuan drop to its lowest point in more than a decade.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced late on Monday that it had determined for the first time since 1994 that China was manipulating its currency, knocking the U.S. dollar .DXY sharply lower and sending gold prices XAU= to a six-year high.

The designation by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin starts a formal process of bilateral negotiations between the world’s two largest economies, and fulfills a promise made by U.S. President Donald Trump on his first day in office. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

China Vows ‘Countermeasures’ If US Deploys Missiles in Asia-Pacific

(Worthy News) – China says it will take “countermeasures” if the United States deploys ground-based intermediate-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific region.

Fu Cong, the director of the Foreign Ministry’s arms control division, told reporters Tuesday that Beijing “will not stand idly by” if Washington follows through on a pledge made last weekend by new Defense Secretary Mark Esper to deploy the missiles in the region “sooner rather than later,” preferably within months.

He urged China’s neighbors, specifically Japan, South Korea and Australia, to “exercise prudence” by refusing to deploy the U.S. missiles, adding that it would serve those countries national security interests. [ Source: VOA News (Read More…) ]

North Korea Fires Two More Projectiles: South Korea

(Worthy News) – North Korea continued to ramp up its weapons demonstrations by firing two presumed short-range ballistic missiles into the sea Tuesday while lashing out at the United States and South Korea for continuing military exercises that the North says could derail fragile nuclear diplomacy.

North Korea’s fourth round of weapons launches in less than two weeks came amid a standstill in nuclear negotiations and after President Donald Trump repeatedly dismissed the significance of the country’s recent tests despite the threat the weapons pose to ally South Korea and U.S. bases there. Experts say the North’s weapons displays could intensify in the coming months if progress isn’t made on the nuclear talks. [ Source: Time (Read More…) ]

Trump freezes all Venezuelan government assets in bid to pressure Maduro

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a freeze on all Venezuelan government assets in the United States on Monday, sharply escalating an economic and diplomatic pressure campaign aimed at removing socialist President Nicolas Maduro from power.

The executive order signed by Trump goes well beyond the sanctions imposed in recent months against Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA [PDVSA.UL] and the country’s financial sector, as well as measures against dozens of Venezuelan officials and entities.

Trump’s action, the toughest yet against Maduro, not only bans U.S. companies from dealings with the Venezuela government but also appears to open the door to possible sanctions against foreign firms or individuals that assist it. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

PA vows to bolster presence in Judea and Samaria over ‘Israeli aggression’

(Worthy News) – Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh on Monday blamed Israel for violating agreements between the parties pertaining to Judea and Samaria.

“Israel continues to attack cities and villages in Areas A, B and C on a daily basis and treats them all as areas under its security and civilian control,” Shtayyeh said at a cabinet meeting in Ramallah.

“Therefore, we will deal with all places as if they are part of Area A,” which is under PA security and civilian control, he added.

Under the 1993 Oslo Accords, the West Bank was split into three areas of control: Area A, which is under Palestinian civil and security control; Area B, under Palestinian civil controls and shared Israeli-Palestinian security control; and Area C, under full Israeli civil and security control.
