Ex-IAEA official to ‘Post’: Iran cutting nuclear breakout time by two months

(Worthy News) – Iran’s violation of nuclear limits by enriching uranium to the 5% level will reduce its breakout time to a nuclear weapon by approximately two months, former deputy director-general for safeguards at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Olli Heinonen told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

After the Islamic republic’s threat in May that it would start reducing compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal if the world failed to drastically improve Tehran’s economic situation by July 7, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said on Sunday that this meant breaking the 3.67% uranium enrichment limit. Former PM Ehud Barak reveals name of newly-formed Israel Democratic Party

(Worthy News) – Former prime and defense minister Ehud Barak revealed the name of his new party on his Facebook profile as the Sabbath drew to a close on July 6, insisting that his “Israel Democratit” party should be translated from Hebrew to English as “Israel Democratic Party,” the Jerusalem Post reported.

Presenting the alternatives as either ‘the State of Netanyahu or the State of Israel,’ the former Labor party leader officially joins a crowded field in the running to unseat Israel’s nearly-longest reigning prime minister.

On Sunday, he already made it known that he is considering the possibility of forming a center-left electoral bloc with Labor, Meretz and former Hatnua chair Tzipi Livni, and that he would even be willing to give up the number one spot if it would help to remove “King Bibi” from office. Archaeologists say they found town where future king David took refuge from Saul

(Worthy News) – In a finding sure to inflame the debate about the historicity of the biblical King David, an international team of archaeologists claims to have identified the lost city of Ziklag.

Based on artifacts and carbon 14 dating results of excavations since 2015, scholars proposed Monday that the archaeological site of Khirbet a-Ra‘i in the Judaean foothills is the site of the elusive Philistine town.

According to a joint press release from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Israel Antiquities Authority, archaeologists discovered remains of a Philistine settlement from the 12-11th centuries BCE, which was followed by a rural settlement dating to the early 10th century BCE, which is in keeping with the biblical account. Carbon 14 dating supports the archaeologists’ timeline and identification, according to the press release. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

U.S. economy beats projections with 224,000 jobs in June

(Worthy News) – The United States added 224,000 jobs during the month of June, beating analysts’ expectations by about 60,000, the Labor Department said in its monthly workforce report Friday.

Analysts predicted an increase of about 165,000 for the month after a dismal May that saw only 75,000 new jobs.

The jobs report came four days after the U.S. economy set a record for most consecutive months of economic growth — 121 — without a recession. The streak dates back to July 2009 when the economy began pulling out of the financial crisis. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Trump to sign executive order to lower drug prices

(Worthy News) – The White House is writing an executive order that would reduce what the U.S. pays for drugs so that it’s more in line with the lowest price paid elsewhere in the world, Trump told reporters Friday.

“As you know, for years and years other nations paid less for drugs than we do,” Trump said Friday at the White House. “Sometimes by 60-70%. We’re working on it right now, we’re working on a favored nations clause, where we pay whatever the lowest nation’s price is. Why should other nations — like Canada — but why should other nations pay much less than us? They’ve taken advantage of the system for a long time, Pharma.”

Trump said the announcement was coming “very shortly” but did not provide other details about how the plan would work. A “favored nations clause” refers to a contract in which a seller gives buyers the same best terms that it offers to other buyers. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Maryland voter registration will allow ‘X’ or ‘unspecified’ for gender identity

(Worthy News) – Maryland will soon allow people to put an “X” or “unspecified” for their gender on their voter registration.

Voting unanimously, the Maryland State Board of Elections passed the measure last week, following a law requiring the state Motor Vehicle Administration to offer the third option for gender on driver’s licenses and state identification cards, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The law, which Gov. Larry Hogan allowed to pass without his signature, did not have much support. Only 37% of those polled said they support offering an “X” for nongender binary people on their driver’s license and 51% were against the idea. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

The position extends only to worshipers who were in an opposite-sex relationship at the time of their marriage, it clarified.

The clarification was made in response to a question asked by Prudence Dailey, churchwarden of St Michael at the North Gate, Oxford, ahead of the General Synod in York. [ Source: Christian Post (Read More…) ]

FBI, ICE using state driver’s license photos without consent for facial recognition searches

(Worthy News) – The FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have reportedly been using driver’s license photos for facial recognition searches without license holders’ knowledge or consent.

The Washington Post reports the two agencies have used millions of Americans’ photos, largely from driver’s licenses, for the purpose of facial recognition searches, citing internal documents and emails from the two agencies that were obtained by Georgetown Law researchers over the past five years and shared with the news outlet.

The photos give the agencies a new layer of information on Americans and a new tool to potentially track both criminals and those who have never committed a crime, according to the Post, which adds that Congress has not authorized any such development of a facial recognition system. Fight over vaccine exemptions hits state legislatures

(Worthy News) – State legislators across the country are moving to tighten limits on vaccine exemptions for children amid one of the worst outbreaks of preventable diseases in recent history.

In response, an unusual coalition of libertarians and liberals influenced by a debunked study has launched a loud and at times threatening campaign to protect the statutory exemptions. A few instances required police intervention.

Legislators in 26 states have introduced bills to crack down on parents who request vaccine exemptions for either personal or religious reasons. Three states — Washington, Maine and New York — have passed those measures. A fourth — California — is likely to pass its version next month. [ Source: The Hill (Read More…) ]
