Russian oligarchs reportedly to be targeted under new US sanctions

(Worthy News) – Russian oligarchs with ties to President Vladimir Putin are to face sanctions in the US, according to American media reports, in retaliation for Moscow’s interference in the 2016 US election.

The sanctions could be announced as early as Thursday, two sources told Reuters.

Four sources told Reuters that the sanctions would be imposed under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, also known as CAATSA. [ Source: UK Telegraph (Read More…) ]

Haley Assails Assad Regime’s Use of Chemical Weapons, Amid Uncertainty Over Trump’s Stance on Syria

(Worthy News) – Amid uncertainty over the future direction of US policy in Syria, Nikki Haley — the US Ambassador to the UN — issued a stinging rebuke on Wednesday to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime over its continued use of chemical weapons.

“We must not forget that while we sit here debating chemical weapons, there are people on the front lines in Syria who are facing the terrifying reality of those heinous weapons,” Haley declared at a meeting of the UN Security Council marking the first anniversary of the massacre at Khan Sheikhoun in northwestern Syria — in which 80 people were killed and hundreds more badly wounded after Syrian Air Force planes dropped a deadly nerve agent on rebel-held areas.

Despite a September 2013 agreement between Russia and the Obama administration for Moscow to remove chemical weapons stockpiles out of the Assad regime’s control, dozens of deadly attacks using chemical weapons were reported in Syria during 2016 and 2017, with at least three so far this year. President Trump orders National Guard to the Mexican border

President Trump orders National Guard to the Mexican border

(Worthy News) – President Trump on Wednesday formally ordered the Pentagon and Homeland Security to deploy National Guard troops to the Mexican border to stem illegal crossings and drug trafficking.

As critics accused Trump of playing politics with border security, the White House did not provide specifics in terms of number of National Guard troops, length of service on the border, or financial costs. It remains unclear exactly how Trump’s order would work, given that National Guard troops are more often deployed domestically under the control of state governors for disaster response.

“A key and undeniable attribute of a sovereign nation is the ability to control who and what enters its territory,” the president’s memo said. “The situation at the border has now reached a point of crisis. The lawlessness that continues at our southern border is fundamentally incompatible with the safety, security, and sovereignty of the American people. My administration has no choice but to act.” [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

House Intel Chairman Threatens Legal Action Against FBI, DOJ Over Russia Records

(Worthy News) – The chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence is threatening legal action against the Department of Justice and FBI for what he says is a failure to comply with a subpoena for documents related to the investigation of the Trump campaign.

In a letter sent Wednesday to FBI Director Christopher Wray and deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, California Rep. Devin Nunes, the Intel Committee chairman, said he is giving the FBI and Justice Department until April 11 to provide the documents.

“Be advised that failure to comply in a satisfactory manner will result in the Committee pursuing all appropriate legal remedies, including seeking civil enforcement of the August 24 subpoenas in federal district court,” he wrote in the letter, which was obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. Trump, GOP could claw back omnibus spending with little-used budget tool

Trump, GOP could claw back omnibus spending with little-used budget tool

(Worthy News) – President Trump and congressional Republicans could claw back parts of the just-signed spending bill for fiscal 2018 using a budget tool that has fallen into disuse in recent decades.

Congressional conservatives want Trump to use the 1974 Impoundment Act to rescind some spending authorized by the $1.3 trillion government appropriations bill, and White House officials are weighing doing so.

Congress could approve any spending revocations Trump proposes with a simple majority in both chambers. That allows Republicans more flexibility than in passing the spending bill, a process that was subject to a Democratic filibuster in the Senate and thus required negotiations with Democrats. Missionaries at border spread Christianity to North Korea

Missionaries at border spread Christianity to North Korea

(Worthy News) – Missionaries in northeastern China are engaged in a dangerous work: spreading Christianity across the border to North Korea.

A South Korean pastor says at least 10 missionaries and pastors have died mysteriously in recent years and suspects North Korea is to blame. Hundreds of others have been imprisoned and expelled from China, which bans foreigners from proselytizing.

Some keep at it in part because they believe their converts could help change religious practice in the cloistered North, which equates Christianity with U.S.-led Western imperialism. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

Rwanda closes thousands of churches in bid for more control

Rwanda closes thousands of churches in bid for more control

(Worthy News) – Rwanda’s government has closed thousands of churches and dozens of mosques as it seeks to assert more control over a vibrant religious community whose sometimes makeshift operations, authorities say, have threatened the lives of followers.

President Paul Kagame has said he was shocked by the high number of churches in this small East African country. “700 churches in Kigali?” he said of houses of worship in the nation’s capital in March. “Are these boreholes (deep wells) that give people water? I don’t think we have as many boreholes. Do we even have as many factories? This has been a mess!”

Kagame said Rwanda doesn’t need so many houses of worship, claiming that such a high number is only fit for bigger, more developed economies that have the means to sustain them. [ Source: Associated Press (Read More…) ]
