Egypt wants to speed up Ethiopia dam negotiations

(Worthy News) – Egypt said on Sunday it wants talks over a dam Ethiopia is building speeded up in a sign of its apparent frustration over what it sees as footdragging by Addis Ababa over the dispute.

Egypt and Ethiopia are at loggerheads over the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam, a US$4 billion (£2.9 billion)-hydroelectric project that Cairo fears will reduce waters that run to its fields and reservoirs from Ethiopia’s highlands and via Sudan.

Addis Ababa hopes the dam will make it a hub for the electricity-hungry region and denies it will undermine Egypt’s access to water. [ Source: Channel News Asia (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Mike Pompeo, calling Iran the “greatest sponsor of terrorism in the world,” pledged his support to Saudi Arabia and Israel during his first foreign trip as the secretary of state Sunday.

Pompeo, who was confirmed by Congress as the top diplomat last week, in both nations repeated President Donald Trump’s threat to pull out of the nuclear deal with Iran if it isn’t reworked.

Kim Jong-un vows to shut down North Korea nuclear site ahead of Trump meeting

(Worthy News) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to shut down the country’s nuclear test site in May and open the process to experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States, Seoul’s presidential office said Sunday.

The event may serve as a dramatic setup to Kim’s crucial nuclear negotiations with President Donald Trump that may take place in the next few weeks amid widespread skepticism on whether the North will ever fully surrender its nuclear weapons.

Kim made the comments during his summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday at a border truce village, where he also expressed optimism about his meeting with Trump, saying the U.S. president will learn he’s “not a person” to fire missiles toward the United States, Moon’s spokesman Yoon Young-chan said. Kim Jong-un says he’ll give up nukes if U.S. promises not to attack

(Worthy News) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told his South Korean counterpart at their historic summit that his country would be willing to give up its nuclear weapons if the U.S. commits to a formal end to the Korean War and a pledge not to attack the North, Seoul officials said Sunday.

Kim also vowed during his meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday to shut down the North’s nuclear test site in May and disclose the process to experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States, Seoul’s presidential office said.

While there are lingering questions about whether North Korea will ever decide to fully relinquish its nukes as it heads into negotiations with the U.S., Kim’s comments amount to the North’s most specific acknowledgement yet that “denuclearization” would constitute surrendering its weapons.
