Feds sue to block California’s new strict net neutrality law

(Worthy News) – California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the nation’s strongest net neutrality rules into law Sunday, but the federal Justice Department quickly sued to block him, arguing he was interfering in federal powers to set national communications standards.

The law seeks to prevent broadband service providers such as Comcast and AT&T from slowing access to some websites, or otherwise playing favorites among content on the internet.

The Obama administration had tried to force the same rules nationally, but the Trump administration’s Federal Communications Commission overturned those rules in a decision that took effect in June. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

As Brexit divisions widen, PM May challenges Brexit critics

(Worthy News) – Prime Minister Theresa May called on her party on Sunday to unite behind her plan to leave the European Union, making a direct appeal to critics by saying their desire for a free trade deal was at the heart of her Brexit proposals.

At the start of what is set to be one of the Conservative Party’s stormiest annual conferences, May’s plans were once again attacked by two former ministers, with her ex-foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, calling them “deranged”.

But she also won strong backing from other Brexit supporting ministers, with trade minister Liam Fox and foreign minister Jeremy Hunt turning their anger against the EU, for “taunting Theresa May, one of the most unfailingly polite people”. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

North Korea, South Korea begin removing landmines along fortified border

(Worthy News) – Troops from North and South Korea began removing some landmines along their heavily fortified border on Monday, the South’s defense ministry said, as part of a pact to reduce tension and build trust on the divided peninsula.

Project details were agreed during last month’s summit in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, between its leader, Kim Jong Un, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

In a statement, the ministry said the two sides agreed to remove all landmines in the so-called Joint Security Area (JSA) in Panmunjom within the next 20 days, with military engineers performing the hazardous task on the South Korean side. [ Source: Channel News Asia (Read More…) ]

Canada-US reach deal to stay in trade pact with Mexico

(Worthy News) – Canada was back in a revamped North American free trade deal with the United States and Mexico late Sunday after weeks of bitter, high-pressure negotiations that brushed up against a midnight deadline.

In a joint statement, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said the agreement “will strengthen the middle class, and create good, well-paying jobs and new opportunities for the nearly half billion people who call North America home.”

The new deal, reached just before a midnight deadline imposed by the U.S., will be called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. It replaces the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, which President Donald Trump had called a job-killing disaster. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
