Senate Republicans ride the Trump train to an expanded majority, even as House GOP falls

(Worthy News) – The Republican Party expanded its majority in the U.S. Senate in Tuesday’s divisive midterm elections, riding a Trump train fueled by red-state enthusiasm right through the rough political headwinds that knocked the GOP from power in the House of Representatives.

At odds last year after the Obamacare repeal effort collapsed, President Trump and Republicans in the Senate made amends, coalesced around a historic $1.3 trillion tax overhaul, and united for the 2018 fight. The race unfolded amid a toxic environment Republicans hadn’t experienced since 2006, when a blue wave sank their congressional majorities, leaving them anxious that an electoral map dominated by ruby red battlegrounds wouldn’t save them.

With a spark lit by a week of explosive, early fall hearings to confirm conservative jurist Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Trump leveraged the fidelity of his followers to back unknown Republican Senate candidates in series of high-octane rallies down the stretch of the campaign, putting battle-tested Democratic incumbents with more money on the defensive and putting their outside shot at winning the majority out of reach. Split decision: Democrats flip House while Republicans add to Senate majority

(Worthy News) – Democrats ousted Republicans in suburban districts across the country Tuesday, taking the reins of power in the House and vowing to stand as a check to President Trump’s agenda.

Though the size of Democrats’ majority was still in doubt, networks projected they would at least net the 23 seats needed to take over when the new Congress convenes in January.

Democrats also netted governorships in Illinois, Michigan and Kansas, with more targets on the horizon. But they failed to win the governor’s mansions in Ohio and Florida, two big states where they’d had hopes for marquee victories. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Security agency chief warns of deceptive calm: We foiled 480 major terror attacks this year

(Worthy News) – The Shin Bet security agency has thwarted 480 ‎Palestinian terrorist attacks so far in 2018, agency ‎Director Nadav Argaman told the Knesset’s Foreign ‎Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday.‎

The Shin Bet’s efforts were a major factor in the ‎defense establishment’s ability to maintain the ‎fragile calm between Israel and the Palestinians, ‎especially in Judea and Samaria, Argaman said.‎

‎”The situation in the Palestinian arena has been ‎‎very unstable this year. In the Gaza Strip, we are ‎somewhere between a potential [military] campaign ‎and efforts to ‎stabilize the humanitarian situation,” he told the committee. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

With Mideast peace plan, Kushner prepares his debut

(Worthy News) – At a standing desk in his cramped, high-ceilinged West Wing office, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser has labored for nearly two years over a detailed plan for peace in the Middle East. Along the way he has granted a mere handful of interviews, none of which have provided much in substance of a plan that has, up until now, remained the administration’s most closely guarded secret.

But we’re about to see a lot more of Jared Kushner. As he puts the finishing touches on a project he hopes to be his crowning achievement in government, Kushner is preparing to sell it to the public.

State Department sources tell The Jerusalem Post that Kushner recently visited Foggy Bottom to begin preparing for a more public role centered on the plan. Moving into the spotlight would be a relatively new format for the prodigal son-in-law, who has rarely spoken in public since entering the White House. While Trump is likely to announce the plan in a formal speech, Kushner is expected, from that point on, to serve as the public face of the peace effort. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

North Korean Christians ‘Desperate’ for Bibles, Risking Death to Acquire a Copy

(Worthy News) – North Korea’s Christians are so hungry for a Bible that they’re willing to risk 15 years in a labor camp or even death to acquire a copy of God’s Word.

That’s according to Rachel Godwin of World Help, a Christian humanitarian organization that is working to smuggle 100,000 physical Bibles into the country.

“There are still countless believers across this dark nation who are desperate for Bibles,” Godwin wrote in a column for FoxNews. “Some people have never even seen a copy of the Scriptures in their life … but they know they would do anything to get their hands on one.” [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

Saudi reactor triggers fears of nuclear race with Iran

(Worthy News) – Saudi Arabia has begun work on its first nuclear research reactor, prompting fresh concern Riyadh will soon seek to develop nuclear weapons if Iran restarts its own weapons program amid Washington’s reimposition of sanctions and withdrawal from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman partook in a ceremony Monday to mark the opening of construction in Riyadh for the research reactor, a facility that could be used education and medical purposes — or for atomic weapons research.

The agency offered few details beyond saying the move fit with the oil-rich kingdom’s desire to diversify its energy sector. However, the ceremony’s timing, on the same day the Trump administration reimposed sweeping sanctions on Iran, suggests Riyadh sought to send a message that it is prepared for a potential nuclear arms race. French president Macron revives idea of ‘true European’ army outside NATO

(Worthy News) – French President Emmanuel Macron is once again stoking debate over the need for a Europe-wide military force to defend against an increasingly aggressive Russia, a force that critics fear could undercut and compete with the transatlantic NATO alliance.

Mr. Macron in a radio interview this week voiced the need for a “true European army” to fortify the continent’s eastern borders against an increasingly assertive Russia, as well as to deal with more unlikely threats in the years ahead.

“We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America,” Mr. Macron told Europe 1. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
