‘Government’s days are numbered,’ coalition official says

(Worthy News) – The days of the ruling 61-MK coalition appear to be numbered, a senior government official said Tuesday.

“There’s a new drama almost every week, fusses and deals, MKs acting on their own to propose bills. It looks like the beginning of the end. Mostly it looks like [Finance Minister] Moshe Kahlon wants to break up the government, but not be blamed for it. It’s not clear how much longer we can go on like this,” the official said.

According to the official, the issue of military conscription for the ultra-Orthodox cannot be resolved at this time. On Tuesday, the government asked the High Court of Justice for an extension of four months to arrive at a compromise on the matter. [ Source: Israel Hayom (Read More…) ]

Democrats nominate Pelosi as House speaker

(Worthy News) – Democrats overwhelmingly nominated Rep. Nancy Pelosi to be House speaker Wednesday despite staunch opposition earlier this month.

The representative from California ran unopposed for the speakership but still faces the full House in January, when she’ll need a majority of votes to reclaim the speakership. There she could afford to lose up to 17 Democratic votes, assuming the party ends up with 235 members in the House after all congressional elections are finalized.

Pelosi had been campaigning behind the scenes for the post, but a small faction in the party pushed for someone else in the job. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Secret list of 142 items key to US-China trade talks

(Worthy News) – When President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping sit down on Friday in Argentina to talk trade issues, it’ll be a three-page document with 142 items on it that they’ll mainly be discussing.

The list is made up of demands initially made by the U.S. that China has broken down into three rough categories: Things they are open to doing, things they are willing to discuss further, and items that are nonstarters for them, according to administration officials and major trade associations.

The list is significant because the Trump administration has sought specific written proposals from China as part of its trade negotiations. China has refused to provide these kind of documents, not wanting to appear to commit to particular proposals.

Don’t expect big interest rate hikes, Fed chief Powell says

(Worthy News) – Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell said Wednesday he regards current interest rates at nearly a neutral level.

He addressed the Economic Club of New York in his first major presentation since he indicated last month the Fed is planning on more interest rate increases.

“Interest rates are still low by historical standards, and they remain just below the broad range of estimates of the level that would be neutral for the economy, that is, neither speeding up nor slowing down growth,” he said. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Defense, State chiefs call for 30-day cease-fire and peace talks for Yemen war

(Worthy News) – Secretary of State Jim Mattis has called for a 30-day cease-fire in Yemen’s civil war and the start of peace talks, within a month’s time.

The Pentagon chief’s remarks signal a clear desire by the United States to bring and end to the fighting that’s plagued Yemen for the last few years.

“Thirty days from now we want to see everybody around a peace table based on a cease-fire, based on a pullback from the border and then based on ceasing dropping of bombs that will permit the [United Nations] special envoy, Martin Griffiths to get them together in Sweden and end this war,” Mattis said in a speech Tuesday at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington. U.S.-China deal at G-20 prompts fears

(Worthy News) – China specialists in and out of government are increasingly worried that President Trump will make major concessions to China during the Group of 20 economic summit in Argentina this week.

The concerns were amplified by comments Tuesday by Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, who said Mr. Trump believes there is a good chance a deal will be reached on the trade war with the Chinese.

The main fear is that China will make promises to curb intellectual property theft and other unfair trade practices in exchange for the U.S. president’s easing of tariffs on Chinese exports. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

‘Noah’s Ark’ on its way to Israel

(Worthy News) – A Dutch carpenter who built his own replica of Noah’s Ark has announced plans to sail the 2,500-ton vessel to Israel (though, minus the animals).

The ark’s builder, Johan Huibers, 60, a devout Christian from the Netherlands, said it looks like the original: “I created a replica true to the original ark described in Genesis.”

The vessel took over four years to build. Huibers began working on the ark’s construction back in 2008, with the help of seven assistants. The cost of its construction was $1.6 million, a sum covered entirely by donations. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

In Meeting with President, Pastors in Nigeria Say Military Complicit in Attacks on Christians

(Worthy News) – Christian leaders meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, Nigeria this month delivered a sharp rebuke, saying the military is complicit in attacks on Christians.

With the governor of Plateau state in attendance, the Rev. Dacholom Datiri, president of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN), delivered a report to Buhari at the presidential villa on Nov. 6 stating that 646 Christians in Plateau state alone were killed from March through October.

“The narrative has been that these people are killed by unknown gunmen, or suspected herdsmen, or that there have been farmer-herders clashes,” Datiri said in the report, obtained by Morning Star News. “All these are deceptive narratives deliberately framed to conceal the truth and continue to perpetrate the evil.” [ Source: Morningstar News (Read More…) ]
