Russia asks U.N. Security Council to discuss North Korea sanctions Thursday

(Worthy News) – Russia has asked the United Nations Security Council to discuss North Korea sanctions on Thursday, diplomats said, a move that comes after a planned meeting between top U.S. and North Korean officials in New York this week was postponed.

It was not immediately clear why Russia wanted the council to discuss the issue, though China’s foreign ministry said last month that Beijing, Moscow and Pyongyang believed it necessary to consider adjusting the U.N. sanctions at an appropriate time.

The 15-member Security Council has unanimously boosted sanctions on North Korea since 2006 in a bid to choke off funding for Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Over 180 Christians Still Detained by Thailand Authorities for Over 2 Months

(Worthy News) – A group of 181 Christian refugees fleeing religious persecution in Vietnam has been detained in Thailand for the last two months.

The refugees, part of an ethnic minority group known as the Montagnards that has been the object of religious and ethnic persecution by the Vietnamese government over the last half-century, were arrested in Nonthaburi province by Thai authorities on August 28th and charged with violations under Thailand’s Immigration Act.

The adults are now being detained in Thailand’s Immigration Detention Center in Bangkok, while the group’s 47 children have been distributed to youth shelters throughout the surrounding area.

“At this point, we cannot confirm that even basic needs such as food, shelter, and sanitation are being provided for these Christian children,” said Jubilee campaign, an advocacy group for global Christians.

Barring the poor living conditions of Thailand’s detention centers, the refugees face possible deportation back to Vietnam where they risk falling into the hands of the communist Vietnamese government, which sees the largely Christian ethnic minority as a threat to national unity and ideological cohesion.

Because of the influx of Montagnards and other refugees into their countries, a June 2015 Human Rights Watch report called on the governments of Thailand and Cambodia to “abide by the international legal prohibition on returning refugees and asylum seekers to a place where their lives or freedom would be threatened.”

The Montagnards in Vietnam have faced the seizure of their ancestral lands as well as detention in labor camps in which they undergo torture and communist re-education as a reward for supporting America’s anti-communist efforts against the North Vietnamese in the Vietnam war.

US report: Iran provoking and threatening the US in Syria and Iraq

(Worthy News) – Iranian forces in Syria may present a threat to the US and in Iraq the Iranian threat is increasing, according to a new report from the US Department of Defense. The Lead Inspector General report on Operation Inherent Resolve was released on Tuesday and reviews the US role fighting Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

However the quarterly report, which covers operations from July to September of this year, notes that Iran is increasingly a threat to the US and examines how Washington is now changing its posture in Syria as the mission changes.

In the last several months US officials have said that American troops would remain in Syria as long as Iranian troops were also present in the country. The US is now seeking to “leverage” its influence in Syria to remove Iran. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Pollsters botch key races as turnout models over-count Democrats

(Worthy News) – Pollsters on Tuesday avoided their disastrous 2016 election forecasts by correctly predicting that Democrats would regain control of the House, though botching some important statewide races.

Unlike 2016, when political gurus at The New York Times, The Washington Post and other media said President Trump had little or no chance of winning, surveyors this time captured voting in blue-state congressional districts where a number of Republican seats flipped.

But pollsters did not fully redeem themselves for the sins of 2016 when they collectively botched Trump wins in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. There were glaring survey errors in 2018 as turnout models over-counted Democrats. By Tuesday night, Republicans had won important Senate and governor races.
