Horror of Islamic State revealed as Iraq, Syria reclaim occupied lands

(Worthy News) – Its vaunted “caliphate” is in shambles, but the brutal legacy of the Islamic State is only now coming into clearer focus as rebuilding efforts across Iraq and Syria uncover hundreds of mass graves and fully pull back the curtain on four years of death, destruction and unspeakable atrocities by the radical Islamist terrorist group.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq revealed this month that it has uncovered evidence of more than 200 mass graves containing as many as 12,000 victims in northern and western Iraq, though Iraqi officials say the number could be even higher. The existence of the gruesome sites could only recently be confirmed, as a U.S.-led military coalition pushes the terrorist group — also known as ISIS — out of the territory it once claimed.

U.N. observers and regional specialists also are urging a seemingly reluctant Iraqi government to commit to exhuming all of the mass graves, identifying the dead as best they can, and documenting in detail the carnage that took place. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Trump submits written answers to Mueller questions

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump has provided the special counsel’s office with written answers to questions about his knowledge of Russian interference in the 2016 election, his lawyers said Tuesday, marking the first time Trump has directly cooperated with the investigation.

The step is a milestone in a months-long negotiation between Trump’s attorneys and special counsel Robert Mueller’s team over whether and when the president would sit for an interview. They represent the first time the president is known to have described to investigators his knowledge of key moments under scrutiny by prosecutors. If Mueller finds the answers satisfactory, the responses may also help stave off a potential subpoena fight over Trump’s testimony.

The compromise outcome, nearly a year in the making, offers some benefit to both sides. Trump avoids, at least for now, a potentially risky and unpredictable sit-down with prosecutors, while Mueller secures a set of on-the-record statements whose accuracy the president and his lawyers will be expected to stand by for the duration of the investigation. Obama-appointed judges undercut Trump on immigration

(Worthy News) – President Trump lost two big immigration court rulings Tuesday, after a federal judge in California shot down his attempt to limit asylum claims and another judge in Michigan ordered the administration to release nearly 100 Iraqi immigrants living in the U.S. illegally who had been detained as part of a travel ban-related deal.

In the asylum case, the judge, an Obama appointee, said the president was illegally trying to circumvent Congress to rewrite immigration laws — a charge Mr. Trump and fellow Republicans used to lodge at President Obama.

The Michigan judge, also an Obama appointee, was even more harsh, accusing Department of Homeland Security officials of misleading the court to keep Iraqi migrants locked in detention, even though the government knew there was little chance of most of them being deported.
