U.K. Parliament Moves Closer to Stopping a No-Deal Brexit

(Worthy News) – The U.K. Parliament is moving closer to a plan to delay Brexit in order to stop the country dropping out of the European Union with no deal and avoid the risk of an economically damaging divorce.

The main opposition Labour Party is now increasingly likely to support a proposal to extend the March 29 exit day deadline, if Prime Minister Theresa May fails to negotiate a divorce agreement, said John McDonnell, the party’s chief finance spokesman. [ Source: Bloomberg (Read More…) ]

Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Case of Coach Who Prayed to Himself on Field in Front of Students

(Worthy News) – On Tuesday, the US Supreme Court refused to hear a case that threatens whether public school employees keep their First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and religion when they’re in front of students.

Joseph Kennedy, a Bremerton, Washington, high school football coach, was suspended and ended up losing his job for kneeling on the field and praying for 15 seconds silently by himself after games.

The school district warned Kennedy that his public prayers were inappropriate and implied that the school was endorsing his beliefs in violation of the establishment clause of the Constitution, according to court documents. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Israel carries out successful Arrow 3 test

(Worthy News) – Israel’s Defense Ministry and the US Missile Defense Agency successfully carried out a test of the Arrow 3 missile defense system in central Israel early Tuesday morning.

The launch from the Palmachim Air Base, which tested upgrades done to the Arrow 3 system, was done at around 6:44am, with many residents in the area reporting hearing an explosion and seeing the trail of a missile launch in the sky.

The Defense Ministry said that “the Israel Missile Defense Organization in the Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure (known by its Hebrew acronym Maf’at), along with the American Missile Defense Agency (MDA), carried out at 6:44am today a successful test of the Arrow 3 weapons system, which is meant to intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. The test was done from a testing ground in central Israel, led by the Israel Aerospace Industries and with the participation of the Israel Air Force.”

Syria on agenda, Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets Vladimir Putin

(Worthy News) – Now that President Donald Trump has announced plans to withdraw US troops from Syria, countries that intend to remain involved in the multifront civil war are adapting their strategies accordingly. And Syria will certainly be on the agenda when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan travels to Moscow on Wednesday to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

The leaders will discuss creating a “security zone” east of the Euphrates River in northern Syria; Erdogan’s desire to launch a military operation to take the self-governed northern city of Manbij, which has been protected by Kurdish forces that drove out the Islamic State (IS) group; and the growing influence of a militia allied with al-Qaida in Idlib.

The proposed corridor would be 32 kilometers (19 miles) wide. Erdogan appears prepared to insist that Turkey alone would establish and police the zone. But it is unclear whether US officials would agree to this.

Israel scores victories at U.N.

(Worthy News) – Israel and the US blocked on Monday a Palestinian attempt to gain observer status for the year on the UN-linked Conference on Disarmament (CD), arguing that only states are eligible for this privilege.

Israeli officials said that the Palestinians had hoped to leverage their recent ascension to head the Group of 77 – a group of 134 developing states, plus China, that makes up the largest group in the UN – to gain admission into other UN-affiliated bodies.

Sixty-five states are members in the CD, and each year at its first annual meeting, it approves a list of countries seeking to take part in the discussions as an observer state for the year. This year, 34 states applied, with the Palestinians being the only rejection. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Israel calls on UN Security Council to block Iranian terror funding: ‘Israel will not hold back’

(Worthy News) – Israel’s United Nations Ambassador Danny Danon called on members of the United Nations Security Council Tuesday to take action to help stop Iran’s funding of global terrorism — and warned that Israel will act if attacked by terrorists.

“If we must, we will respond alone. We will defend our democracy; safeguard our sovereignty; and protect our people,” Danon told the Council at a debate on the Middle East. “If Israel must act, Israel will not hold back.”

Danon said Tehran spends $7 billion a year on funding terrorism, and presented members with new information showing how Iran had been increasing funding and training to terror groups in the West Bank. He called on the U.N. to label groups like Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic jihad as terrorist organizations, which would in turn bar countries from sending them money. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

‘No Cave!’: Trump shoulders shutdown blame, bets Democrats will pay in 2020

(Worthy News) – The question for the White House is not who’s to blame for the partial government shutdown but rather who will voters blame for weak border security in 2020.

President Trump is convinced that Democrats will pay a hefty price with voters for opposing his border security plan, and he vowed Tuesday to never “cave” in the shutdown fight.

Democrats remain just as adamant that they are winning the showdown, with polls confirming that most Americans pin the blame on Mr. Trump for the shutdown, now in its fifth week. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Shutdown’s damage to economy could exceed $5.7 billion cost of Trump’s border wall

(Worthy News) – The government shutdown — the longest in U.S. history — is estimated in 31 days to have cost the American economy almost as much as the $5.7 billion President Trump has demanded for his proposed southern border wall.

Average weekly direct and indirect costs of the partial shutdown, which began Dec. 22, currently add up to $1.2 billion, according to Beth Ann Bovino, S&P Global’s U.S. chief economist. Monday marked the start of the shutdown’s fifth week, and the closure will have caused roughly $6 billion in damage to the economy if the government does not reopen by the end of the week, Bovino estimated in a recent research note.
