Heartbeat Bill Victory in Kentucky

(Worthy News) – Kentucky’s House passed Senate Bill 9, a fetal heartbeat bill, by a vote of 71 to 19 last night. SB 9 bans most abortions in the state once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The measure requires anyone seeking an abortion to first determine if a fetal heartbeat is detectable, typically about six weeks into pregnancy. The bill now moves on to Governor Matt Bevin’s desk.

Republican Rep. Chris Fugate sponsored SB 9 on the House floor. Fugate said for him, this bill is not political but is about the millions of babies that have been killed. In February, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 31 to 6. While the bill was in committee, April Lanham, a woman 18 weeks pregnant, allowed the room of people to hear her preborn baby’s heartbeat by way of an electronic monitor. Afterward she stated that she did so because the heartbeat would be a “powerful noise” for lawmakers to hear.

Governor Matt Bevin is expected to sign the bill. Because of an emergency clause, upon the governor’s signing, it will take effect immediately. The ACLU of Kentucky has expressed an intent to bring a lawsuit once the fetal heartbeat bill becomes law.

“Liberty Counsel commends the legislators of Kentucky for this move to protect the lives of the most innocent among us,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. “If the vilest criminal cannot be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, then how much more should laws protect an innocent unborn child from the most despicable form of torture and death? Every state must fight to make the womb a safe place again,” said Staver.

Christian B&B must serve same-sex couples, Supreme Court lets ruling stand

(Worthy News) – The United States Supreme Court declined to hear oral arguments in a case about a Hawaiian bed and breakfast that refused on religious grounds to serve a lesbian couple, allowing a ruling against the business to stand.

In an order released Monday, the high court denied a petition for a writ of certiorari in the case of Cervelli v. Aloha Bed & Breakfast, thus upholding a lower court ruling against the small business.

Phyllis Young, owner of the three-room Aloha Bed & Breakfast, will now face a penalty for her refusal in 2007 to rent a room to Diane Cervilli and Taeko Bufford, according to Reuters. [ Source: Christian Post (Read More…) ]

Iran Building Two New Nuclear Plants

(Worthy News) – Iranian leaders announced on Monday the construction of two new nuclear plants, and it remains unclear if the Trump administration views this as crossing a red line since its abandonment of the landmark nuclear deal, which included provisions permitting Iran to work on heavy water nuclear reactors that could provide a plutonium-based pathway to a bomb.

On the same day it announced these new nuclear reactors, which are being built in conjunction with Russia, Iran announced it would be filing papers accusing the United States of “crimes against humanity.”

The new nuclear moves are rattling congressional Iran hawks, who have been critical of a series of waivers issued by the Trump administration permitting Iran to continue engaging in nuclear research, including at an underground site that once housed the regime’s nuclear weapons program. Brexit in crisis as May plots a course around speaker’s obstruction

(Worthy News) – Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plans were in disarray on Tuesday as her government sought to plot a way around the speaker of parliament’s ruling that she had to change her twice-defeated divorce deal to put it to a third vote.

After two-and-a-half years of negotiations with the EU, Brexit remains uncertain – with options including a long postponement, exiting with May’s deal, a economically disruptive exit without a deal, or even another EU membership referendum.

Speaker John Bercow blindsided May’s office on Monday by ruling the government could put the same Brexit deal to another vote in parliament unless it was substantially different to the ones defeated on Jan. 15 and March 12. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]
