Theresa May: No ‘sufficient support’ for third vote on Brexit deal

(Worthy News) – U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May told the House of Commons that there was still not enough support among MPs to bring her Brexit deal back for a third vote.

May’s government has until March 29 to win parliamentary approval for her deal, which would allow the U.K. to leave the EU with an agreement on May 22. If she fails to do, or does not hold a vote, the U.K. would have until April 12 to propose a new way forward or leave without a deal.

However, May has said that she will not bring her deal back until she is confident she can win. Speaking in the House of Commons Monday she said there was “still not sufficient support in the house to bring back the deal for a third meaningful vote.” [ Source: Politico (Read More…) ]

Michigan bars Christian adoption agencies from refusing LGBT couples after legal settlement

(Worthy News) – Adoption and foster care agencies in Michigan who contract with the state can no longer refuse to place children with qualified same-sex parents over religious reasons thanks to a legal settlement Friday that some fear will put faith-based agencies out of business.

Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel and the two same-sex couples represented by the American Civil Liberties Union came to a legal agreement that a 2015 law allowing religious-based adoption agencies to refuse adoption services to same-sex couples violates federal discrimination laws.

The agreement settled a federal complaint filed in 2017 after the couples were refused service by St. Vincent Catholic Charities and Bethany Christian Services. [ Source: Christian Post (Read More…) ]

Trump turns to trade fights with Congress, China and Europe now that the Mueller probe is mostly out of the way

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump will throw himself fully into his battle to overhaul U.S. trade deals this week with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation — mostly — behind him.

The president won the White House in large part by pledging to crack down on foreign trade abuses and rework international agreements to boost U.S. manufacturing and protect American workers. The conclusion of Mueller’s probe — and the Justice Department’s decision not to charge the president with obstruction of justice — comes at a pivotal time in Trump’s push to follow through on a campaign priority ahead of his 2020 re-election bid.

Trump will try to rework U.S. trade relationships on more than one front in the coming weeks and months. He not only aims to strike a new deal with China, but also wants Congress to ratify a revised North American trade deal. [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

The end for Obamacare? Trump administration says it will ask a court to throw out entire health law

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration told a federal court late Monday that it would ask judges to toss out the entire Affordable Care Act, a decision that cast further uncertainty over the future of a federal law that has extended health insurance to millions of Americans.

Justice Department attorneys said in a letter filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans that a lower court’s ruling the health law is unconstitutional “should be affirmed” and that the “United States is not urging that any portion of the district court’s judgement be reversed.”

A coalition of Republican-led states brought a lawsuit, Texas v United States, arguing the entire health law should be tossed out. [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

Ohio abortion clinics may lose funding if elective procedures are performed

(Worthy News) – Ohio officials have given notice to Planned Parenthood and other health care providers that the state may soon end their funding if they “perform or promote” elective abortions, under a state law recently deemed constitutional by a federal appeals court.

Ohio Health Secretary Amy Acton issued a memo Thursday to state grant recipients saying they have 30 days to come into compliance with the 2016 law.

“In future contracts and subgrants, [the Health Department] will add additional assurance language and require acknowledgment signatures to ensure compliance with this law,” Ms. Acton said in the memo. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

The Flood-Hit Midwest Is Bracing for Even More Rain

(Worthy News) – Floodwaters are receding across most of the hard-hit Midwest, but there could be new problems if the forecast for significant rain later this week holds up. Already the flooding along the Missouri River and its tributaries has caused at least $3 billion damage and forced thousands from their homes as floodwaters penetrated or flowed over several hundred miles of levees.

The flooding has taken a heavy toll on agriculture in the region, inundating tens of thousands of acres, threatening stockpiled grain and killing livestock. Thousands of people have been forced from their homes in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri, and some have yet to return to assess the damage. Residents of Kansas City, Missouri, are being asked to conserve water while KC Water treats murky water caused by filtration issues. Flooding has closed about 140 roads in Missouri, even as water levels begin falling along much of the Missouri River.

Officials in those three states plan to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine if any changes need to be made to the system of levees that is supposed to protect towns and cities from swollen rivers. [ Source: Time (Read More…) ]

Moms Are Influencing Children for Christ. Dads? Not So Much, Survey Finds

(Worthy News) – Christians are far more likely to say their mothers had a bigger influence on their faith than did their fathers, according to a new Barna study that examines the roles that moms and dads play in the development of children.

The study found that 68 percent of U.S. Christians who grew up with someone who influenced their faith say their mother’s faith impacted them. That was followed by the father (46 percent) and a grandparent (37 percent).

That pattern also was found among Christian teens, who are more likely to say they have prayed with or talked about God with their mom in the past month than with their father. [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

Homeland missile defense system takes out ICBM threat in historic salvo test

(Worthy News) – The Missile Defense Agency is deeming the first salvo test — conducted today — of its homeland missile defense system against an intercontinental ballistic missile threat a success, according an agency statement.

The MDA last tested the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense System’s (GMD) Ground-Based Interceptors (GBI) in a full-up test against an ICBM target in May 2017.

At the time, the MDA’s director said the agency was next shooting to conduct a more complex salvo test involving two GBIs against an ICBM because firing off two GBIs against one target is more operationally realistic and important in proving out the effectiveness of the overall system.
