Supreme Court warily weighs partisan gerrymandering

(Worthy News) – The Supreme Court appeared convinced Tuesday that congressional maps drawn by two state legislatures were overly partisan, but worried whether judges themselves should be the ones to remedy the long-simmering issue.

Partisan gerrymandering may be the wonky side of politics, but the stakes are huge: the balance of power in state legislatures and Congress could tip in coming years, particularly after the 2020 census, when voting boundaries will be redrawn based on population changes.

The justices heard two separate cases. In North Carolina, the 2011 map drawn by the GOP-led legislature now has 10 of 13 congressional seats held by Republicans, despite an overall state population that is mostly divided along party lines, and where statewide elections have recently been close. Gaza rockets, Israeli airstrikes resume overnight after tense lull

(Worthy News) – The cross-border fighting between Israel and Hamas, which resumed late Tuesday evening, continued into early Wednesday, with Israeli military striking several Hamas military positions in Gaza, while air-raid sirens sounded in southern Israeli communities.

The lull in violence was broken late Tuesday when Gaza militants fired a rocket at the Eshkol Regional Council, drawing retaliatory air strikes from the Israeli Air Force shortly after.

The airstrikes targeting Hamas positions continued well into the night, with Palestinian militants firing rockets at the southern city of Ashkelon, which was intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

Republican-led US Senate Rejects Green New Deal

(Worthy News) – The Republican-led Senate Tuesday night voted against consideration of the Democratically-supported New Green Deal — the outline of an ambitious plan to get the U.S. off climate-changing fossil fuels.

The vote was 57 to zero against the green proposal. Forty-three Democrats only said “present” when their names were called, refusing to participate in what they say was a Republican sham vote and stunt.

Cornell University Disinvites Black Christian Pro-Life Speaker Because of Her Belief in Biblical Marriage

(Worthy News) – A black Christian speaker was recently disinvited from an on-campus debate due to her biblical beliefs about sexuality. It’s just the latest example of American universities blocking Christian views from the spotlight.

Earlier this year, Jannique Stewart, a pro-life speaker with the Life Training Institute had been invited to speak at Cornell University’s Political Union (CPU) “regarding the fact that abortion is a moral wrong.”

In a Facebook post on Mar. 23, Stewart wrote that in a shocking phone call she had been disinvited from the event because of her outspoken beliefs regarding biblical sexuality – that sexual activity should be reserved for marriage and natural marriage defined by God as the union of one man and one woman. Democrats, Muslim lawmaker decry Christian prayer in Penn. House as divisive

(Worthy News) – The first female Muslim member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives said Tuesday she was offended by a colleague’s decision to open a voting session with a prayer a day earlier that “at the name of Jesus every knee will bow.”

Democratic Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell of Philadelphia said she felt the remarks by Rep. Stephanie Borowicz shortly before Johnson-Harrell took the oath of office on Monday used her religion against her.

“I thought that for the most part, the entire invocation was offensive,” Johnson-Harrell told reporters, noting that her own religion respects Jesus. “But to use Jesus as a weapon is not OK.” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]
