U.S. lawmakers introduce bill to stop NSA’s mass data collection

(Worthy News) – Republican and Democratic U.S. lawmakers introduced a bill on Thursday that would end the collection of Americans’ phone records by the National Security Agency in an effort to undo a widely criticized security measure passed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

“The NSA’s sprawling phone records dragnet was born in secrecy, defended with lies and never stopped a single terrorist attack,” said Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, one of the bill’s main sponsors.

He and three other lawmakers introduced their bill to overhaul the Patriot Act in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, calling the data collection programme “unconstitutional.” [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

House votes to condemn Trump’s transgender military ban

(Worthy News) – The House passed a resolution formally condemning the Trump administration’s transgender military ban in a 238-185 vote on Thursday.

Five Republicans joined every Democrat in backing the measure, which was spearheaded by Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.), who serves as the chair of the Equality Caucus’s Transgender Equality Task Force.

The resolution’s passage comes shortly after the administration announced that the requirement for members of the military to serve as the gender they were assigned at birth would be implemented next month, effectively undoing the Obama administration’s policy from June 2016. Judge deals blow to ‘Trumpcare’ plans

(Worthy News) – A federal judge has struck down a rule letting individuals and small businesses pool together to buy health insurance, threatening a program encouraged by the Trump administration that was created as an escape hatch from high Obamacare premiums.

The ruling, issued Thursday by U.S. District Judge John Bates, a President George W. Bush appointee, came after 11 states and the District of Columbia sued saying that the rules violated Obamacare and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or ERISA.

Bates agreed, concluding in his opinion that the rule, issued by the Department of Labor, was “clearly an end-run around” Obamacare. He also stated the Trump administration didn’t have the authority under ERISA to change the rules. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Israel said to warn Hamas any error could lead to war, as IDF preps for violence

(Worthy News) – As the Israeli military continued its preparations for a possible outbreak of violence at protests along the Gaza border planned for Saturday, an Egyptian delegation reportedly told Hamas that any mistake it makes could lead to war.

The Israeli military said Thursday it is readying for protests along the Gaza border planned for Saturday, Palestinians’ Land Day, and a possible outbreak of violence. Land Day also marks a year since the start of weekly violent protests along the Israel-Gaza border, known as the March of Return, which at times have escalated into exchanges of fire between Israel and Palestinian terror groups in the coastal enclave, most recently earlier this week.

An Egyptian military intelligence delegation has been working to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ahead of the mass protest, amid fears that clashes along the border could snowball into a larger conflagration. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]
