Robert Mueller prosecutions embolden Trump opponents, don’t prove collusion

(Worthy News) – Special counsel Robert Mueller has now won or assisted in guilty pleas or convictions against a number of figures in the president’s inner circle during the 2016 campaign — but has yet to prove a more fundamental case of Russia-Trump collusion.

The successful prosecutions have become a powerful retort for the president’s opponents, who say the conviction of Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman on eight counts Tuesday and guilty pleas from his former national security adviser, personal attorney and two campaign advisers all undercut claims that Mr. Mueller’s investigation is a witch hunt.

In one of those cases, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a campaign finance violation in paying off a porn actress to prevent her from going public during the campaign about a sexual encounter. Mr. Cohen implicated Mr. Trump in illegal activity, saying he made the payments at the direction of the candidate. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Federal court strikes down Alabama abortion law

(Worthy News) – A federal appeals court found Wednesday that an Alabama state law that bans a common abortion procedure is unconstitutional, becoming the first appeals court to weigh in on such a ban.

The ruling issued Wednesday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit pertains to a 2016 state law banning a procedure called dilation and evacuation, which is used in second-trimester abortions done between the 15th and 18th weeks of pregnancy.

No federal appeals court had previously decided on the constitutionality of banning dilation and evacuation, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which fought the law. Lower courts have blocked similar bans in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas, the ACLU said. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Top Iranian cleric threatens Tehran will target Israel if US attacks

(Worthy News) – A senior Iranian cleric on Wednesday warned that Tehran would target Israel if the United States harmed the Islamic Republic, continuing an escalating war of words over sanctions reimposed by Washington.

“The costs of a possible US war on Iran will be definitely heavy for Americans, and any aggression against Iran will inflict costs not only on America, but also on its ally, the Zionist regime,” Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said, according to the Iranian Tasnim news agency.

In June, the deputy commander of Iran’s hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps boasted that Iranian-backed forces in Syria and Lebanon were awaiting orders to eradicate the “evil regime” of Israel. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Navy moves Pearl Harbor fleet as Hurricane Lane nears Hawaii

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Navy is moving its ships and submarines away from Hawaii on Wednesday as the state braces for the oncoming Hurricane Lane.

Rear Adm. Brian Fort, commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific announced all ships not currently undergoing maintenance would be moved out of Pearl Harbor and placed in a position to help respond after the storm, if needed.

“Based on the current track of the storm, we made the decision to begin to sortie the Pearl Harbor-based ships,” Fort said. “This allows the ships enough time to transit safely out of the path of the storm.” [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

U.S. and China officials meet as Thursday tariff deadline looms

(Worthy News) – U.S. and Chinese officials met for the first time in more than two months to try find a way out of their deepening trade conflict, but there was no evidence that the low-key discussions would halt a new round of U.S. tariffs due on Thursday.

A delegation of Chinese officials entered the U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday for talks, video on CNBC showed. Business groups expressed hope that the two-day meeting would mark the start of serious negotiations over Chinese trade and economic policy changes demanded by President Donald Trump.

Trump has threatened to impose duties on virtually all of the over $500 billion of Chinese goods exported annually to the United States unless Beijing agrees to sweeping changes to its intellectual property practices, industrial subsidy programs and tariff structure. Billboards Removed After Image of Pastor Holding a Bible Was Called ‘Offensive’

(Worthy News) – If ever you needed proof that Christianity is under attack, this Bible billboard controversy is it. Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Southern California was forced to remove his billboard ads at local malls, all because he was shown holding a Bible!

Each year, for nearly 30 years, SoCal Harvest hosts a crusade. And Pastor Greg Laurie wanted to get the word out about the church’s free, 3-night event. So, he contacted a local billboard company to buy some advertising space in malls around the area.

The ads were up for about two weeks when the billboard company asked Pastor Greg to revise them. [ Source: Christian Headlines (Read More…) ]

China Shifts to Iranian Tankers to Keep Oil Flowing Amid US Sanctions

(Worthy News) – Chinese buyers of Iranian oil are starting to shift their cargoes to vessels owned by National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) for nearly all of their imports to keep supply flowing amid the re-imposition of economic sanctions by the United States.

The shift demonstrates that China, Iran’s biggest oil customer, wants to keep buying Iranian crude despite the sanctions, which were put back after the United States withdrew in May from a 2015 agreement to halt Iran’s nuclear program.

The United States is trying to halt Iranian oil exports to force the country to negotiate a new nuclear agreement and to curb its influence in the Middle East. China has said it is opposed to any unilateral sanctions and has defended its commercial ties with Iran. [ Source: Algemeiner (Read More…) ]

Netanyahu angers settlers by only advancing 1,400 homes

(Worthy News) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu angered settlers and right-wing politicians by only advancing plans for close to 1,400 new Jewish homes in West Bank settlements on Wednesday.

Rather than welcoming the new construction, the bulk of which was advanced by the Higher Planning Committee for Judea and Samaria on Wednesday morning, Netanyahu’s right-wing partners complained that it was far too little.

The Higher Planning Council on Wednesday advanced 1,010 new units, of which the largest project was 370 new homes for the Geva Binyamin settlement, also known as Adam. A July terror attack in that community that borders Jerusalem claimed the life of Yotam Ovadia, 31. The building project is part of a larger plan to eventually construct 1,093 new homes in that community. It’s a move that would likely double the size of the community of over 5,200 people. The settlement is located on the edge of both Jerusalem and Ramallah and is outside the route of the security barrier. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

US, Israel officials downplay Trump’s warning of ‘price’ over Jerusalem moves

(Worthy News) – US and Israeli officials on Wednesday downplayed a remark made by US President Donald Trump a day earlier in which the American leader said Israel would pay “a higher price” in peace talks with the Palestinians to compensate for Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate its embassy to the city.

Seeking to calm Israeli concerns, senior US officials told Channel 10 that “the US will not impose unacceptable conditions on Israel in its peace plan.”

At the same time, an Israeli official said US National Security Adviser John Bolton had clarified the American president’s comments. Bolton, who was on a visit to Jerusalem, had said earlier on Wednesday the president’s speech did not represent a change in the US administration’s policy on peace negotiations.
