Russian military braces for massive war games in the east

(Worthy News) – Russia’s military forces in the country’s east were put on high alert Monday ahead of massive war games that also involve China and Mongolia, the largest show of power in nearly 40 years, the Russian defense minister said.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the five days of military drills will pave the way for the Vostok (East) 2018 military exercise. Shoigu said those maneuvers, set for next month, will be the largest since the massive Soviet war games in 1981.

The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said President Vladimir Putin could attend the exercise. [ Source: AP (Read More…) ]

Israel is under massive Chinese, Russian cyber espionage attack

(Worthy News) – A few months ago, ‘Ophir,’ a senior official with a rich intelligence background turned private cyber security expert, was called back to duty.

The mission: Ophir and a team of experts were asked to examine the security of some of Israel’s main computer systems. A few systems were defined as “strategic,” others of lesser importance. But since less time and energy is spent on protecting these secondary systems, it can make them even more vulnerable to infiltration. The investigation team was put together by one of Israel’s governmental intelligence and information protection agencies.

The idea was to have someone from the outside—a fresh pair of eyes—look at these systems and identify “holes” and problems that may have gone unnoticed by the regular cyber security team. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

Trump to end ‘war on coal’ with rule replacing Obama-era Clean Power Plan

(Worthy News) – President Trump was met with enthusiastic cheers Tuesday in West Virginia after moving to snuff out the “war on coal” by replacing the Clean Power Plan, even as Democrats prophesied that scrapping the never-implemented Obama-era rule would be catastrophic.

“We are putting our great coal miners back to work,” Mr. Trump told the crowd in Charleston. “We love clean, beautiful West Virginia coal. We love it.”

Mr. Trump made the comments hours after the Environmental Protection Agency announced that it would seek to substitute the long-dormant Clean Power Plan with the newly proposed Affordable Clean Energy rule, which would give states greater authority over reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fueled power plants. Iran’s New Line of “Indigenously” Made Jets is Comparable to 1950’s F-5 Fighter Jets

(Worthy News) – Iran unveiled the fighter jet at a defense show in Tehran on Tuesday, calling the Kowsar a “fourth-generation” fighter, with “advanced avionics” and multi-purpose radar, the Iranian news agency Tasnim said, adding that it was “100-percent indigenously made.”

But analysts quickly noted similarities between the plane and the F-5 fighter jet, made by Northrop-Grumman in the 1950s.

The F-5 was sold to Iran in the 1960s and first entered operation in the Iranian Imperial Air Force in 1965. In the West, the F-5 line of jets is largely used for training purposes.

Iran has already used the F-5 platform — and, some observers suggest, actual parts from its aging fleet of non-flying F-5s — to develop its newer jets. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Trump: Israel will pay ‘higher price’ in peace talks after embassy move

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump said Tuesday night Israel will pay “a higher price” in peace talks with the Palestinians due to his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Charleston, West Virginia, Trump said Palestinians “will get something very good” in any future negotiations.

“If there’s ever going to be peace with the Palestinians, then this was a good thing to have done,” Trump said of the recognition of Jerusalem and the relocation of the US embassy to the capital. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

US not discussing recognition of Israeli sovereignty on Golan — Bolton

(Worthy News) – US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton on Wednesday said the administration wasn’t discussing potential recognition of Israel’s claim to sovereignty over the Golan Heights, despite reported pressure from Jerusalem to make the move.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War and annexed the territory in the early 1980s. But the United States and the international community have long refused to recognize Israeli sovereignty there and considered it Syrian territory under Israeli occupation.

“I’ve heard the idea being suggested but there’s no discussion of it, no decision within the US government,” Bolton told the Reuters news agency in an interview published Wednesday morning. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Bolton: Putin said he can’t force Iran out of Syria, but wants it gone

(Worthy News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin told the United States that his country would like Iranian forces to withdraw from Syria but cannot force them out, US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser said on Wednesday, despite Israeli calls for Iran to leave immediately.

Like Iran, Russia is providing military backing to Present Bashar Assad’s regime in the Syrian civil war. Israel repeatedly has warned it will not tolerate the military presence of Iran and its proxies in Syria and has carried out airstrikes against Iranian targets.

In a Wednesday press conference with Israeli and US reporters in Jerusalem, John Bolton said Putin had said he would like Iran to withdraw from Syria, “but he said, ‘I can’t do it myself.’” [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Hurricane Lane strengthens to Category 5 as it heads for Hawaii

(Worthy News) – Hurricane Lane strengthened to a Category 5 storm on Tuesday as it headed toward Hawaii where residents braced for “life threatening” winds and flooding when it hits the U.S. islands this week, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The hurricane, packing 160 miles per hour (260 km) winds was expected to hit Hawaii’s Big Island on Thursday with gusts capable of damaging roofs and knocking out power, the NHC warned.

The center of the storm is expected to track “dangerously” close to or over the islands Thursday through Saturday, the NHC said. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Facebook takes down 652 accounts linked to Russia, Iran

(Worthy News) – Facebook has identified and banned hundreds of accounts, groups and pages engaged in misleading political behavior, a far larger discovery than a “sophisticated” effort it reported three weeks ago with great fanfare.

The social network said Tuesday that it had removed 652 pages, groups, and accounts linked to Russia and, unexpectedly, Iran, for “coordinated inauthentic behavior” that included the sharing of political material.

Facebook has significantly stepped up policing of its platform since last year, when it acknowledged that Russian agents successfully ran political influence operations on its platform that were aimed at swaying the 2016 presidential election. Other social media networks have done likewise, and continue to turn up fresh evidence of political disinformation campaigns. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

South Africa begins seizing white-owned farms in land redistribution program

(Worthy News) – The South African government has begun the process of seizing white-owned farmland, reportedly filing legal papers seeking to expropriate two farms for one-tenth of their estimated value.

The filings, involving two game farms in the northern province of Limpopo, come as the African National Congress government is seeking to amend the country’s constitution to allow outright seizures of land with no compensation. The ANC’s leader also has recently argued that pure expropriation is allowed anyway now “in the public interest.”

According to the local City Press in South Africa, the Akkerland Boerdery wants 200 million Rand for the two pieces of land (about $13.8 million), as it had been assessed in 2011.

But the government wants to take it for 20 million, without the benefit of a court’s judgment of the land’s value — something supposedly legally guaranteed. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
