Trump flips 3rd Circuit federal appeals court with ‘Bridgegate’ attorney

(Worthy News) – With the confirmation of a nominee to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, President Trump has for the first time in his presidency flipped an appeals court to have a majority of Republican-appointed judges.

The approval of Paul Matey, who was deputy chief counsel to GOP New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie during the “Bridgegate” controversy, to the federal appeals court in Philadelphia marked a milestone in the efforts by the president and the Republican-controlled Senate to reshape the federal judiciary.

The Senate approved Matey’s nomination in a 54-45 vote on Tuesday. He is the 35th appeals court nominee confirmed since Trump took office. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., was the only Democrat to join with his Republican colleagues in voting for Matey. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Turkey says it is discussing Syria offensive with Russia, U.S.

(Worthy News) – Turkey is discussing with Russia and the United States a potential military offensive in a region of northeast Syria controlled by Kurdish fighters, a Turkish defense official was cited as saying by state media on Tuesday.

Turkey wants to set up a safe zone in the border area east of the Euphrates river after most U.S. troops pull out.

The American military has been supporting Kurdish-led forces there who are fighting remnants of the caliphate declared by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2014. Turkey, however, views the Kurdish YPG fighters as terrorists and has repeatedly threatened to launch operations against them. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

U.S. envoy: United States, Taliban reach draft agreement in peace talks

(Worthy News) – The United States and the Taliban have reached a draft agreement on counter-terrorism assurances and troop withdrawal in a step toward ending the 17-year-long war, U.S. presidential envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said Tuesday.

Khalilzad wrote on Twitter that “the conditions for peace have improved” after a round of talks with Taliban leaders in Qatar’s capital, Dohar, as the two sides had agreed on two of the four issues needed to end the conflict.

“Peace requires agreement on four issues: counter-terrorism assurances, troop withdrawal, intra-Afghan dialogue, and a comprehensive ceasefire,” he wrote. “In January talks, we ‘agreed in principle’ on these four elements. We’re now ‘agreed in draft’ on the first two.” [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Planned Parenthood has ‘no right to perform abortions,’ Ohio can defund: 6th Circuit

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned an earlier ruling against an Ohio law that strips Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics public health funding.

In a split en banc ruling, the federal appeals court has seemingly paved the way for the Buckeye state to no longer give tax dollars meant for non-abortion public health matters to organizations that perform abortions.

The majority of the court ruled that the Ohio law, passed in 2016 to mandate that the Ohio Department of Health refuse funding to any entity that performs elective abortions, was not unconstitutional. The court reasoned that abortion organizations “do not have a due process right to perform abortions.” [ Source: Christian Post (Read More…) ]

U.S. Senate to vote Wednesday on Saudi Yemen war resolution

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Senate will vote on Wednesday on a resolution to end Washington’s support for the Saudi Arabia-led military campaign in Yemen, as lawmakers push President Donald Trump to toughen his policy toward the kingdom.

The vote on the war powers resolution will be the second within four months in the Senate. The chamber passed the measure by 56-41 in December, a rebuke of Trump amid anger at Saudi Arabia not just over civilian deaths in Yemen, but also the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a Saudi consulate in Turkey.

To become effective, however, the resolution must be passed by the new Senate, which was seated in January, as well as the House of Representatives. Then it must garner enough votes to override an expected veto by Trump, who has touted the importance of a strategic alliance with Riyadh. [ Source (Read More…) ]

Venezuela Blames U.S. for Record Blackout and Orders American Diplomats to Leave

(Worthy News) – With resentment percolating over a record-setting blackout, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro lashed out at the U.S., blaming the U.S. for the country-wide outages and ejecting American diplomats from the country on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Maduro claims that U.S.-backed cyber “sabotage” prompted the six-day power cuts in his crisis-wracked country.

“Donald Trump is most responsible for the cyber attack on the Venezuelan electricity system,” Maduro said in a broadcast. But experts said the powercut was more likely caused by technical problems in the link between the country’s hydropower plants and the power grid. [ Source: Time (Read More…) ]
