Hamas official: 50 of those killed in Gaza Monday were members

(Worthy News) – Fifty of the Palestinians killed in a protest in the border region between the Gaza Strip and Israel earlier this week were Hamas members, Hamas Politburo member Salah Bardaweil said on Wednesday.

The IDF described the protests on Monday as “a violent riot,” asserting that participants tried to enter Israel, threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at security personnel and placed a bomb near the border fence.

However, international and local rights groups accused Israel of using “excessive force” against “unarmed protesters.”

At least 61 Palestinians were killed on Monday, according to Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

“The number I am telling you is official. Fifty martyrs from Hamas were martyred in this most recent battle,” he told Baladna, a Gaza-based TV station. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More…) ]

Seoul pushes for successful Trump-Kim talks as North warns

(Worthy News) – South Korea said Thursday it’s pushing to reset high-level talks with North Korea and will communicate closely with Washington and Pyongyang to increase the chances of a successful summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on resolving the standoff over the North’s nuclear weapons.

The announcement by Seoul’s presidential National Security Council came a day after North Korea threatened to scrap next month’s historic meeting between Trump and Kim, saying it has no interest in a “one-sided” affair meant to pressure the North to abandon its nukes. The North also broke off a high-level meeting with South Korea to protest the U.S.-South Korean military exercises the North has long claimed are an invasion rehearsal.

The North’s surprise announcement seemed to cool what had been an unusual flurry of outreach from a country that last year conducted a provocative series of weapons tests that had many fearing the region was on the edge of war. Analysts said it’s unlikely that North Korea intends to scuttle all diplomacy. More likely, they said, is that it wants to gain leverage ahead of the talks between Kim and Trump, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Senate intel committee: Russian officials conspired to help Trump

(Worthy News) – Breaking with the House, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Wednesday endorsed a U.S. intelligence finding that Russia secretly tried to interfere with the 2016 election to boost Donald Trump and hurt Hillary Clinton, calling the accusations of Russian meddling ‘accurate and on point.’

Leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee revealed their conclusion after a closed-door hearing on the issue with the top Obama administration officials who authorized the intelligence consensus report that was publicly released just two weeks before Mr. Trump took office in January 2017.

But the Senate panel, which avoided many of the partisan fights that plagued the House Intelligence Committee’s probe, said it was still exploring the question of whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians, and many GOP lawmakers said they has seen no evidence of Mr. Trump’s personal involvement. The panel earlier this month said it had found no proof the Russians had swayed the elections or managed to change vote counts. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
