(Worthy News) – The Trump administration will soon begin fingerprinting parents claiming custody of children who entered the United States illegally without an adult relative, officials said on Tuesday, prompting criticism that children may be abandoned by those who fear being identified and deported.

Currently, most parents are not required to be fingerprinted to get custody of their children.

U.S. laws and legal precedent limit the time juveniles can be detained, so those caught crossing the border alone are often released to adult sponsors in the United States. (Worthy News) – For the first time, researchers have watched human ‘organizer’ cells direct the formation of an embryo’s top, bottom, front and back. They did so by developing a technique that sidesteps restrictions on research with human embryos by grafting human cells onto chicken embryos. The method, published on 23 May in Nature1, could supplant the use of human embryos in some laboratory experiments.

Organizer cells were discovered in 1924, during a series of experiments in Germany on salamanders2. A pair of developmental biologists transplanted cells from the back of one salamander embryo onto the front of another, where the cells grew into a second, conjoined salamander. This suggested that certain cells on an embryo’s back could organize their neighbours into the complex array of structures that make up an animal.

Since then, researchers have identified organizer cells in the embryos of many other species. But scientists had never observed such cells guiding early human development. Ethical guidelines and laws in many countries—including the United States — prohibit scientists from experimenting with human embryos more than 14 days old, which is about the time when organizer cells would be likely to appear. (Worthy News) – One of the rockets fired by terrorist groups from Gaza at southern Israel Tuesday struck equipment that provides electricity to the southern Gaza Strip, knocking out power to thousands, a spokesperson for Israel’s Electric Company said.

The damage to three power lines leading to Gaza was preventing the flow of electricity to the the southern areas of the beleaguered coastal enclave, the spokesperson said Tuesday evening, leaving tens of thousands of Gazans with no electricity.

(Worthy News) – The eruption of the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is spewing more than molten lava and ash. It is also putting out 15,000 tons of ‘vog,’ or volcanic fog, every day.

People living as far away as the Marshall Islands, 2,300 miles from Hawaii, are experiencing vog from Kilauea blanketing the sky. Symptoms include burning eyes, headaches and sore throats, Agence France-Presse reported Monday.

(Worthy News) – The U.S. Supreme Court let Arkansas start enforcing a law that effectively bars pill-induced abortions, turning away an appeal by two Planned Parenthood clinics and at least temporarily leaving the state with only one abortion provider.

The justices rejected the appeal in a one-line order, without any published dissent, suggesting the court’s liberals made a tactical decision not to object publicly at this point.

Planned Parenthood said in a statement it will immediately stop providing medication abortions in the state while also seeking an emergency order to again block the law. (Worthy News) – The Navy considers the actions of Chinese warships that warned two U.S. Navy ships away from the Paracel Islands over the weekend to have maneuvered in a “safe but unprofessional” manner. That assessment means the ships maneuvered erratically but not in a way that posed a risk of collision, CBS News’ national security correspondent David Martin reports.

China said it dispatched warships to identify and warn off a pair of U.S. Navy vessels sailing near one of its island claims in the South China Sea. A statement on the Defense Ministry’s website said the Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins, and Ticonderoga class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam, entered waters in the Paracel Islands “without the permission of the Chinese government.” It said the Chinese military “immediately dispatched warships to identify and inspect the American ships according to law, and warned them to depart.”

China has controlled the Paracels entirely since violently seizing Vietnam’s holdings in the area in 1974. Called “Xisha” in Chinese, the islands have been incorporated into the southern province of Hainan and are being developed for tourism, as well as being equipped with weapon systems meant to enforce China’s claim to virtually the entire South China Sea. (Worthy News) – The Reverend Franklin Graham has revived his Decision America Tour, focusing on the state of California ahead of this year’s midterm elections.

Begun on May 20 at an event in Escondido, thousands attended Graham’s stop at Fresno on Monday, where the head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association led attendees in prayer.

The tour goes through or near several key swing districts for the U.S. House. The New York Times’ Elizabeth Dias followed Graham on part of the tour. (Worthy News) – Iran and Saudi Arabia were among the Middle Eastern countries whose records on religious freedom were severely criticized on Tuesday, with the publication of the US State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report for 2017.

In remarks at a press briefing to introduce the annually-compiled report, Sam Brownback — the former Kansas governor and senator who was confirmed as US ambassador-at-large for International Religious Freedom this past February — highlighted the fact that “Saudi Arabia does not recognize the right of non-Muslims to practice their religion in public and imprisons, lashes, and fines individuals for apostasy, blasphemy, and insulting the state’s interpretation of Islam.”

(Worthy News) – A new poll by Pew Research Center indicates European Christians, once the driving force behind the faith’s expansion worldwide, no longer are.

They may call themselves Christian, but Pew describes them as “non-practicing” and found that they “drifted away,” “were alienated” or just “stopped believing.” They only rarely walk in the doors of a church.

The survey found for example, that while 83 percent of Belgians say they were “raised Christian,” only 55 percent now identify as such. [ Source: WND (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Thousands of Israelis spent the night in bomb shelters as terrorists in the Gaza Strip fired some 40 rockets and mortar shells at communities near the coastal enclave early Wednesday, with several of the projectiles being intercepted by Iron Dome. There were no reports of injuries.

The IDF said that rockets and shells were fired at the Eshkol, Sha’ar Hanegev and Sdot Negev regions and that Iron Dome intercepted some of them, while most of the others fell in open areas. One house in the Eshkol region suffered a direct hit; it was empty at the time.

The army did not give the number of rocket and mortar fire launches, but Hebrew media reports said there were more than 40. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]
