US economy’s growth rate boosted to 4.2 percent

(Worthy News) – The U.S. economy grew 4.2 percent in the three months through June, slightly faster than initially reported and the most in four years.

The improvement of 10 basis points reflects more complete data than were available for last month’s calculation by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, including an improvement in commercial and industrial investments and a drop in imports, which are subtracted from gross domestic product.

The changes made up for a downward adjustment of 20 basis points in consumer spending, which along with government investment should “continue to anchor growth for the remainder of the year,” Pooja Sriram of British lender Barclays Plc said in a report. Consumer companies from cosmetics firms Estee Lauder to electronics giant Best Buy have benefited from shoppers loosening their purse strings after last year’s tax cuts, though some are cautious about the rest of 2018. Walking the Walk: New Study Reveals People Raised By Religious Hypocrites More Likely to Become Atheists Later

(Worthy News) – A new study reveals that people tend to become atheists at a younger age when their religious parents are hypocritical about their faith.

The results were published in the Religion, Brain & Behavior Journal and explores how “the extent to which behavioral models consistently live out their professed ideals” affects their children.

The researchers asked 5,153 atheists how old they were when they renounced their faith and how committed their parents were in their own faith. They discovered that when parents sincerely model their religious beliefs in front of their children, they delay their decision to become atheists. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

China’s African Swine Fever Outbreak Could Spread to Korea, SE Asia

(Worthy News) – The Korean peninsular and Southeast Asia may be next to report outbreaks of African swine fever after the rapid onset of the deadly pig disease in China, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The outbreak in China is significant as the nation is home to more than half the world’s hogs, and pork is the country’s principal source of dietary protein. Pork is also popular in the Korean peninsular and Southeast Asia. China has so far culled 24,000 pigs in the four affected provinces, according to the FAO.

Besides being capable of killing every pig it infects, the virus is highly contagious and persistent. There’s no vaccine to protect hogs from catching it and culling infected animals and imposing strict containment measures are the way to limit further spread. [ Source: Bloomberg (Read More…) ]

US to continue backing Saudi coalition in Yemen war

(Worthy News) – Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday the U.S. intends to continue backing the Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen despite civilian casualties and questions about the Saudis’ commitment to avoiding killing innocents.

At a rare Pentagon news conference, Mattis defended U.S. support for the coalition, saying American influence on the Arab air campaign has made a difference in reducing instances of errant bombing and the targeting of civilians.

He noted, however, that U.S. support is conditioned on a Saudi commitment to doing “everything humanly possible” to avoid any loss of innocent life and Riyadh supporting a U.N.-brokered peace process to end the civil war. The U.S. provides the Saudis and their United Arab Emirate coalition partners with intelligence, aerial refueling and military advice, but U.S. forces are not directly involved in the airstrikes or other aspects of the fighting. NATO Confirms Russian Naval Buildup Off Syria, Calls for Restraint

(Worthy News) – NATO confirmed a large-scale Russian navy buildup in the Mediterranean Sea off Syria on Tuesday. “The Russian Navy has dispatched substantial naval forces to the Mediterranean, including several ships equipped with modern cruise missiles,” NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu confirmed to Haaretz in a statement.

Russian media on Tuesday called the deployment Moscow’s largest naval buildup since it entered the Syrian conflict in 2015. The reinforcement comes as Russia’s ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is believed to be considering an assault on the last big rebel-held enclave, Idlib in the north.

Russia claimed on Monday that the U.S. is preparing for a possible strike on Syria. Major-General Igor Konashenkov was quoted by agencies as saying that the USS Ross, a guided-missile destroyer, had entered the Mediterranean on Aug. 25 armed with 28 Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of hitting any target in Syria.
