Nation of Islam receiving federal cash to teach prisoners

(Worthy News) – The Nation of Islam and its leaders have received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the U.S. government since 2008 to teach religious study programs for federal prison inmates, according to records reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

A black nationalist group led by Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam preaches that white people are “blue-eyed devils” and Jews are “the synagogue of Satan.” Its leaders have received at least $364,500 in contracts and awards from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice between fiscal 2008 and fiscal 2019.

The funding was designed to provide “Nation of Islam religious services,” “Nation of Islam spiritual guide services,” “Nation of Islam study services,” and other related programming led by the organization’s leaders, according to Bureau of Prison records. The Nation of Islam has been labeled a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Senate approves historic, bipartisan prison sentencing reform bill

(Worthy News) – The Senate Tuesday approved an historic and bipartisan reform of the criminal justice system that aims to reduce the sentences of nonviolent offenders and cut recidivism rates by helping prisoners productively rejoin society.

With the House of Representatives almost certain to pass the bill, the Senate vote sets up a major legislative victory for President Trump — who has promised to sign it — as he approaches the halfway point of his four-year term.

The legislation, with the help of the White House, won an easy Senate majority despite conservative GOP opponents and the early reluctance of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who had just weeks ago downplayed the likelihood of taking up the measure this year. Russia says it won’t let US see missile at heart of nuclear dispute

(Worthy News) – Russia said on Wednesday it would not let the United States inspect a new nuclear-capable cruise missile at the heart of a dispute between Washington and Moscow that risks unravelling a landmark arms control treaty.

Washington has threatened to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), alleging that the new Russian missile, the Novator 9M729 (called SSC-8 by NATO), violates the pact, which bans either side from stationing short and intermediate-range, land-based missiles in Europe.

Russia says the missile’s range puts it outside the treaty altogether and is not as long as Washington alleges, meaning that it is fully compliant with the INF. It has accused the United States of inventing a false pretext to exit a treaty it wants to leave anyway so as to develop new missiles. [ Source: Channel News Asia (Read More…) ]

Nikki Haley in farewell talk: U.N. ‘hopelessly biased’ on Israel

(Worthy News) – Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, described the world body as “hopelessly biased” against Israel on Tuesday in her last address to the monthly Security Council meeting in New York.

“Over the past two years, I have attempted to provide more value in this monthly meeting by using my time to speak about other pressing problems in the Middle East,” Haley said. “I’ve done it to illustrate that most of the region’s problems have absolutely nothing to do with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And I’ve done it to encourage the U.N. to move away from its obsession with Israel.

But she broke from tradition to address the Israel-Palestinian issue. Two weeks ago, the General Assembly failed to adopt a U.S. resolution condemning terrorism by Hamas. Yet it has passed more than 700 resolutions critical of Israel over the years, she said. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Judges dismiss 83 ethics complaints against Kavanaugh

(Worthy News) – A panel of federal judges has dismissed more than 80 ethics complaints against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, because lower courts can’t investigate a high court jurist.

The ethics complaints accuse Kavanaugh of lying in 2004 and 2006 during confirmation hearings to the Washington, D.C., Circuit Court.

The majority of the complaints say he misled the Senate about activities while serving in the administration of President George W. Bush. Under Bush, he was White House staff secretary between 2003 and 2006. He was also part of Bush’s legal team that challenged the vote recount in Florida following the contested 2000 presidential election. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]
