Markets deliver historic Christmas Eve drop as Trump feuds with Fed

(Worthy News) – U.S. stocks fell sharply Monday, making it the worst Christmas Eve trading day ever.

Stocks extended a run of recent losses in response to turbulence in Washington, D.C., including President Trump’s early morning attack on the Federal Reserve as “the only problem” with the U.S. economy and an unexpected call by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to the six largest U.S banks on Sunday.

When the New York Stock Exchange finally closed Monday at 1 p.m. Eastern, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had dipped roughly 650 points, or nearly 3 percent. Closing below 22,000 made Monday the worst Christmas Eve trading day ever for the Dow. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Tight security at Pakistan’s churches this Christmas as Asia Bibi remains in hiding

(Worthy News) – Security has been ramped up at churches across Pakistan where tensions are still simmering over the recent acquittal of Christian woman Asia Bibi.

Churches have previously been the target of suicide bombers and this year, police have trained hundreds of Christian volunteers in an effort to see the season through peacefully.

More than 1,500 police have been deployed across Islamabad and Rawalpindi to protect churchgoers over Christmas, AFP news agency reports. CCTV cameras have also been installed at entry points and parking restrictions have been put in place to keep cars at least 100m away from church buildings. [ Source: Christian Today (Read More…) ]

Israel going to the polls: Early Knesset elections to be held April 9

(Worthy News) – Israel is returning to the polls: The heads of the factions in the coalition decided at a special meeting held Monday afternoon that general elections will take place on April 9, 2019. The Knesset will likely be dissolved on Wednesday.

Education Minister Naftali Bennett, chairman of the Jewish Home party, was not present at the meeting, but joined the other coalition party leaders in supporting April elections.

The decision to go to the polls was apparently made after it became clear that the 61-member coalition, with its one-seat majority, would not be able to pass legislation on the draft of ultra-Orthodox into the army, which had a January 15 deadline. Earlier in the day, opposition parties Yesh Atid and Yisrael Beiteinu made it clear that they did not intend to support the law. Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid called the coalition’s hoped-for compromise a payoff to draft dodgers. [ Source: YNet News (Read More…) ]

Snap elections may put Trump’s peace plan on back-burner until summer

(Worthy News) – Israel’s early election will significantly delay the publication of the US administration’s much-awaited proposal for Israeli-Palestinian peace, experts said Monday, as the White House keeps the plan on the back-burner for fear of influencing the vote.

White House officials working on the plan are said to be wary of turning the elections into a referendum on the peace plan. And the concessions it will require from Israel would offer parties close to the settlement movement a perfect platform from which to attack Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and others who might be seen as in favor of it, something the administration is apparently keen to avoid.

The snap elections, scheduled for April 9, will likely also affect Netanyahu’s travel plans, as he balances his pursuit of diplomatic breakthroughs with the need to orchestrate his Likud’s party’s campaign. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Turkey vows no slowdown in fight against IS after U.S. pullout from Syria

(Worthy News) – Turkey vowed on Monday that the fight against Islamic State would not be slowed by the U.S. withdrawal from Syria, where Ankara-backed rebels reinforced their positions around the potential flashpoint town of Manbij.

Erdogan and Trump agreed in a phone call on Sunday to establish military and diplomatic coordination to prevent a power vacuum from developing as the United States withdraws.

A committee of U.S. military officials will visit Turkey this week to discuss the details of the pullout with their counterparts, Kalin said, adding that Turkey would also increase coordination with Russia in Syria. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

(Worthy News) – Christians in eastern Uganda are among those in their faith who face the most serious dangers in the world, according to World Watch Monitor, a group that tracks persecutions of Christians. The charity counted at least two incidents of Muslims killing Christians as well as vandalism of at least two churches.

“I witnessed an incident here where a Christian woman was brutally attacked with a machete by her Muslim husband for refusing to convert to Islam,” said Mr. Saku. “We continue to condemn the incident and urge our Muslim brothers to respect other religions and uphold freedom of worship.”

Muslims dismissed the allegations and said they warned their Christians neighbors not to make provocative statements that offend them. “We have now declared a jihad against them,” said Abubakar Yusuf, 55, a Muslim teacher. “We are not going to allow anybody to despise Islamic teachings at their church or crusade. We will seek revenge.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]
