‘We’ve never seen anything like this’: As Trump threatens to close border, migrants overwhelm Texas cities

(Worthy News) – Under a bridge connecting the U.S. with Mexico, dozens of migrant families cram into a makeshift camp set up by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The families are there because permanent processing facilities have run out of room.

Seven hundred miles east, busload after busload of weary, bedraggled migrants crowd into the Catholic Charities Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. Organizers there are used to handling 200 to 300 migrants a day. Lately, the migrants have been arriving at a clip of around 800 a day, overflowing the respite center and straining city resources.

“It’s staggering,” McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez said. “Really, we’ve never seen anything like this before.” [ Source: USA Today (Read More…) ]

Venezuelans rally to protest chronic power outages

(Worthy News) – Thousands of Venezuelan opposition sympathizers protested on Saturday against recurring blackouts that crippled much of the country this month and have aggravated the OPEC nation’s economic and social crisis.

Electricity has slowly been restored following a blackout on Monday that left most of Venezuela’s 24 states without power. That followed a massive week-long national outage on March 7.

President Nicolas Maduro has said the situation was caused by “terrorist attacks” on the Guri hydroelectric dam that powers much of the country. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

What deficit? House hopes to advance bill next week lifting spending caps

(Worthy News) – House Democrats next week hope to advance a two-year proposal that would raise caps on defense and domestic spending that were put in place in 2011 to reduce the debt.

House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth, D-Ky., told the Washington Examiner “the odds are” his panel will vote next week to advance measure-busting caps that would otherwise limit domestic spending to $542 billion and defense spending to $576 billion for fiscal 2020.

Yarmuth could not disclose the higher top-line numbers but said domestic spending would outpace defense spending, which is in contrast to President Trump’s proposed 2020 budget that provides an overall $750 billion in military spending while keeping domestic spending at the caps level of $542 billion. Barrage of rockets hits southern Israel but Gaza crossings reopen

(Worthy News) – Militants fired five rockets from Gaza into Israel early Sunday, the Israeli military said, following a day of Palestinian mass protests along the Israel-Gaza perimeter fence. Despite the rocket fire, the Kerem Shalom and Erez border crossings – which have been closed since last Monday when a Gaza rocket destroyed a house in central Israel – were reopened on Sunday morning.

The rocket attack is believed to be in response to the deaths of four Palestinians, including three teenagers, who were killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said Israeli tanks struck several Hamas observation posts inside Gaza, in response to the rocket fire, aimed at the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel. No casualties were reported from the rockets and no Palestinian group claimed responsibility. [ Source: Ynet News (Read More…) ]

Georgia lawmakers pass heartbeat abortion ban, joining four other U.S. states

(Worthy News) – Georgia’s Republican-controlled legislature on Friday passed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the United States, outlawing abortion if a doctor is able to detect a heartbeat.

The state’s House of Representatives passed the bill with a 92-78 vote, sending it to Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who is expected to sign it into law. The state Senate previously passed the measure.

“Georgia values life. We stand up for the innocent and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. The legislature’s bold action reaffirms our priorities and who we are as a state,” Kemp said in a Twitter post. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Turkey: Air-Defense Purchase from Russia ‘Done Deal’

(Worthy News) – Turkey will honor its air-defense deal with Russia despite warnings from Washington, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said following talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

“We have agreed with Russia in the end and signed an agreement. This agreement is valid [and] we are discussing when the delivery will be,” Cavusoglu told reporters on March 29.

“This agreement is a done deal,” he added.

Four U.S. senators on March 28 introduced a bipartisan bill to prohibit the transfer of F-35s to Turkey until the U.S. government certifies that Ankara will not take delivery of the S-400 system. [ Source: Radio Free Europe (Read More…) ]
