Dem leaders stress more Trump probes, downplay impeachment

(Worthy News) – A House chairman on Monday subpoenaed former White House Counsel Don McGahn as Democratic leaders moved to deepen their investigation of President Donald Trump while bottling up talk among their rank-and-file of impeaching him.

Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler was one of six powerful committee leaders making their case on a conference call with other House Democrats late in the day that they are effectively investigating Trump-related matters ranging from potential obstruction to his personal and business taxes.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged divided Democrats to focus on fact-finding rather than the prospect of any impeachment proceedings after the damning details of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report. [ Source: ABC News (Read More…) ]

Hezbollah chief says Israel’s ground forces unprepared for war

(Worthy News) – Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Monday claimed Israel’s ground forces were unprepared for a military offensive in Lebanon and the Jewish state could no longer win battles solely from the air.

In a speech, he estimated that Israel would not seek to initiate a conflict with the neighboring country, as its home front is not prepared to withstand missiles fired by Hezbollah at its major cities.

During his speech, Nasrallah rebuffed as false a report that he had met with senior commanders and warned that the likelihood of war with Israel over the summer was high. According to the Kuwaiti report, he said Hezbollah could suffer severe casualties and he himself might be killed. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More…) ]

Theresa May says Christians should be allowed to live out their faith in peace

(Worthy News) – Theresa May has used her Easter message to say that people of all religions should have the right to practise their faith in peace.

On the same day as over a hundred people died during attacks on Easter services in Sri Lanka, the British Prime Minister said that for Christians around the world, the simple act of going to church “can bring huge danger”.

She said this threat to Christians was the reason why the government recently launched a review into persecution around the world.

She said: “For millions of Christians in this country and around the world, Easter is a particularly special time, when we remember the powerful message at the heart of our Christian faith, a message of hope of the resurrection of Jesus Christ when we can look forward to a new life in Christ. Medicare, Social Security Face Shaky Fiscal Futures

(Worthy News) – The financial condition of the government’s bedrock retirement programs for middle- and working-class Americans remains shaky, with Medicare pointed toward insolvency by 2026, according to a report Monday by the government’s overseers of Medicare and Social Security.

It paints a sobering picture of the programs, though it’s relatively unchanged from last year’s update. Social Security would become insolvent in 2035, one year later than previously estimated.

Both programs will need to eventually be addressed to avert automatic cuts should their trust funds run dry. Neither President Donald Trump nor Capitol Hill’s warring factions has put political perilous cost curbs on their to-do list. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

U.S. offers $10M for financial disruption to Hezbollah

(Worthy News) – The U.S. government on Monday offered a $10 million reward for information leading to a financial disruption to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

U.S. Treasury Department official Marshall Billingslea said Washington, D.C., wants to “hit Hezbollah in the wallet.” Hezbollah, which the United States considers a terror organization, has sent fighters to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad, and has had growing influence in Lebanon’s government.

The State Department said it would pay the reward for information about Hezbollah’s sources of revenue, any major donors, financial institutions facilitating transactions, businesses owed by the group, front companies or other criminal schemes. [ Source: UPI (Read More…) ]

Kansas’ new governor vetoes abortion ‘reversal’ rule, setting up showdown with GOP

(Worthy News) – Kansas’ new governor vetoed a bill Monday that would require doctors and abortion clinics to tell their patients about a disputed treatment meant to stop a medication abortion.

The veto from Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, sets up a showdown with a Republican-dominated legislature that appears to have the two-thirds majorities needed in both chambers to override the veto. Legislators are scheduled to return from a weeks-long break May 1.

The bill would require abortion clinics to display a sign notifying women that they could stop a medication abortion by taking the hormone progesterone — even if they have already taken Mifepristone, the first of two drugs used in the procedure — and doctors would have to tell a patient in writing that a medication abortion could be reversed. A clinic that failed to post a sign could be fined $10,000, and a doctor who failed to notify a patient could be charged with a misdemeanor for a first offense and a felony for a second. Federal Court Punishes Philly Faith-Based Foster Care Agency Over Biblical Views on Marriage

(Worthy News) – A federal appeals court has upheld a new Philadelphia city policy that forbids Catholic Social Services from placing foster children with families due to the agency’s longstanding religious beliefs about marriage.

As CBN News reported, Catholic Social Services has partnered with the city for over 50 years in placing foster children with families. Last year, the city threatened to close the agency because it disagreed with the agency’s biblical belief that marriage is between one man and one woman — even though not one LGBTQ couple had applied with the agency.

Represented by Becket, a non-profit public-interest law firm, Sharonell Fulton, a single mother who has fostered more than 40 children in 26 years, joined other foster parents licensed through Catholic Social Services to file a lawsuit against the city. [ Source: CBN News (Read More…) ]

Michigan adoption agency reverses LGBT policy

(Worthy News) – A major faith-based foster care and adoption contractor for the state of Michigan said Monday it will place children in LGBT homes, reversing course following a recent legal settlement.

Grand Rapids-based Bethany Christian Services is responsible for about 8% of Michigan’s more than 13,000 foster care and adoption cases involving children from troubled households.

“We are disappointed with how this settlement agreement has been implemented by the state government. Nonetheless, Bethany will continue operations in Michigan, in compliance with our legal contract requirements,” the nonprofit said in a statement, confirming a policy change that was first reported by WGVU-FM. (Worthy News) – Iraq and Saudi Arabia were preparing on Monday to reap the benefits of the Trump administrations decision to end sanction waivers on Iran’s oil customers.
