Theresa May seeks help from Merkel and Macron ahead of critical Brexit summit

(Worthy News) – U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May traveled to Berlin and Paris Tuesday for talks with the German and French leaders in a bid to secure backing for a second delay to Brexit.

The talks come before EU leaders meet in Brussels on Wednesday for an emergency summit dedicated to Brexit. At the EU Council meeting, the remaining 27 EU leaders will have to decide whether or not to grant the U.K. more time before it leaves the bloc — which was due to take place on Friday.

The country was originally meant to leave the EU on March 29 but was granted more time as U.K. lawmakers rejected May’s withdrawal agreement on three separate occasions. It has now asked for another extension of the Brexit deadline, to June 30. [ Source: CNBC (Read More…) ]

Russia’s Putin hosts Turkey’s Erdogan to discuss Syria, ties

(Worthy News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is hosting his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for talks expected to focus on the situation in Syria and their two nations’ booming economic ties.

Russia and Turkey have closely coordinated moves on Syria, where they created a security zone in the northern province of Ildib.

Russia and Iran have thrown their support behind Syrian President Bashar Assad, while Turkey has backed his foes during the eight-year war. Despite that, the three countries have teamed up to broker a peace deal for Syria, united by their shared desire to undercut U.S. clout in the region. [ Source: Fox News (Read More…) ]

EU open to Brexit extension but PM May needs clear plan

(Worthy News) – European Union ministers said on Tuesday the bloc was ready to grant Britain a second Brexit delay but that British Prime Minister Theresa May must come up with a clear plan of how to ratify the stalled divorce deal in the overtime.

EU ministers are meeting in Luxembourg a day before 27 national leaders of the bloc will decide during afternoon talks in Brussels on whether to allow Britain another extension to try to break the deadlock in London over Brexit.

Without an extension, Britain is due to leave the EU at 2200 GMT on Friday, without a deal to cushion the economic shock. [ Source: Reuters (Read More…) ]

Iranian lawmakers convene with chants of ‘Death to America’

(Worthy News) – Chanting “Death to America,” Iranian lawmakers convened an open session of parliament Tuesday following the White House’s decision to designate Iran’s elite paramilitary Revolutionary Guard a foreign terrorist organization.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council immediately responded by designating the U.S. Central Command, also known as CENTCOM, and all its forces as terrorist, and labeling the U.S. a “supporter of terrorism.”

It was the first time the United States has designated an entity of another government as a terrorist organization, placing a group with vast economic resources that answers only to Iran’s supreme leader in the same category as al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.
