Israeli scientists say they 3D-printed a heart

(Worthy News) – Israeli researchers said on Monday they have printed the world’s first 3D heart with blood vessels, describing it as a major breakthrough in engineering replacements for diseased organs.

At this stage, scientists printed pink and blue 3D rabbit-size hearts but Professor Tal Dvir of Tel Aviv University, who led the research for the study said that “larger human hearts require the same technology.”

‘Born alive’ abortion bill passes North Carolina Senate

(Worthy News) – A bill requiring doctors and nurses to protect and care for children born alive during a failed late-term abortion cleared the North Carolina Senate on Monday, handing social conservatives a victory that could ultimately be undone by the Democratic governor.

The Republican-drafted legislation specifies that health care practitioners should grant those children born alive the same protections as any other newborn patient. Those who don’t do so could face a felony and active prison time, along with potential $250,000 fines and other monetary damages. A mother can’t be prosecuted, but health care providers who fail to report any improper care to authorities could be charged.

“This has nothing to do with limiting abortion in any way,” said Republican Sen. Joyce Krawiec, the bill’s sponsor, in floor debate. “This bill changes nothing except how that born-alive infant is treated.” [ Source: Waco Tribune-Herald (Read More…) ]

Yale Law School defends new pro-LGBTQ fellowship policy

(Worthy News) – Yale Law School is defending a new policy that ends funding for fellowships with organizations that refuse to hire LGBTQ students, saying it complies with federal non-discrimination laws.

But Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative advocacy nonprofit group, says the elite law school’s policy violates the religious freedom of organizations that strive to uphold traditional Christian values.

Yale announced the policy in March, and last week issued a statement saying it is in compliance with federal policies, such as the Justice Department’s Equal Employment Opportunity statement on April 4 that included protections for “gender identity and sexual orientation.” [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Faith-based adoption agency sues after Michigan settlement

(Worthy News) – Faith-based adoption agencies sued the state of Michigan on Monday, challenging a settlement that prevents them from refusing to put children in LGBT homes for religious reasons.

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty filed the lawsuit in western Michigan’s U.S. District Court on behalf of Lansing-based St. Vincent Catholic Charities. It is among more than 90 agencies receiving state funding to help place children from troubled homes with new families, according to the complaint.

“The state’s decision to exclude certain agencies and certain very successful agencies like St. Vincent simply because of their religious beliefs causes unnecessary harm to the countless kids they’re serving now and could be serving in the future merely because the attorney general doesn’t like what St. Vincent believes and has believed for over 75 years,” said Nick Reaves, a lawyer with Washington-based Becket.
