Turkey election: Erdogan wins re-election as president

(Worthy News) – Turkey’s long-standing leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won a new five-year term after securing outright victory in the first round of a presidential poll.

Election authority chief Sadi Guven said the president “received the absolute majority of all valid votes”.

Russian jets strike rebel-held town in south Syria, Breaking Ceasefire Deal

(Worthy News) – Russian jets struck an opposition held town in southwest Syria on Sunday, opposition sources said, in the first air cover provided by Moscow to an expanding Syrian army offensive to recapture the strategic area bordering Jordan and the Israeli Golan Heights.

Two tracking centers that monitor military aircraft movements recorded at least twenty strikes on Busra al Harir, northeast of Deraa, a city in Syria, two sources told Reuters.

Opposition hopes had been raised after Washington warned Assad and his Russian allies that violations of the zone would have “serious repercussions” and pledged “firm and appropriate measures”. [ Source (Read More…) ]

European countries to formalize EU defense force plan

(Worthy News) – Nine European Union nations will on Monday (Jun 25) formalize a plan to create a European military intervention force, a French minister said, with Britain backing the measure as a way to maintain strong defense ties with the bloc after Brexit.

The force, known as the European Intervention Initiative and championed by French President Emmanuel Macron, is intended to be able to deploy rapidly to deal with crises.

A letter of intent is due to be signed in Luxembourg on Monday by France, Germany, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Estonia, Spain and Portugal, French defense minister Florence Parly told the newspaper Le Figaro. [ Source (Read More…) ]

Erdogan says Turkey will continue advancing in Syria

(Worthy News) – Turkey will continue to “liberate Syrian lands” so that refugees can return to Syria safely, President Tayyip Erdogan said in an election victory speech on Monday.

Speaking to supporters from the balcony of his ruling AK Party’s headquarters in Ankara after Sunday’s presidential and parliamentary elections, Erdogan said Turkey would also act more decisively against terrorist organizations. [ Source (Read More…) ]
