Detained Jihadist Claims ISIS Has Plot to Send Syrian Child Recruits to Europe to Carry Out Attacks – Report

(Worthy News) – French investigators are trying to establish the veracity of claims that ISIS plotted to send child recruits from Syria to Europe to carry out terrorist attacks, according to a report by the daily newspaper Le Monde, based on the interrogation of a suspect in French custody.

Jonathan Geffroy, a 35-year-old French jihadist who was arrested last year while trying to escape from Syria with his family, reportedly revealed the plan during questioning.

The reported plan involved the recruitment and training of children in Syria, who after adolescence would be sent to France and other countries in Europe to commit attacks. [ Source: CNS News (Read More…) ]

Supreme Court delivers major blow to government unions

(Worthy News) – The Supreme Court delivered a major blow to public-sector unions Wednesday, ruling that they cannot force government workers to join or financially support them.

The 5-4 ruling in the case, called, Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, by the court’s conservative wing overturned a four-decade-old precedent and affects about seven million people.

Union leaders expect the ruling to result in major membership losses and drained treasuries as workers, who previously had no choice, start opting out of being involved with unions. [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Op-Ed: 6 rulings that could be overturned by a post-Kennedy Supreme Court

(Worthy News) – Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement this afternoon. For decades, Kennedy was the swing justice on an otherwise ideologically balanced Supreme Court. Although he never served as chief justice, his vote was decisive in a great number of major cases.

Here are six cases in which Kennedy sided with the more liberal members of the court in order to produce a 5-4 ruling. A post-Kennedy court in which the justice is replaced by a reliably conservative jurist could overturn any or all of these cases: Roe v. Wade (abortion), Kelo v. New London (eminent domain), Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage), Massachusetts v. EPA (environmental protection), U.S. Term Limits, Inc v. Thornton (term limits for Congressmen set by States), and Kennedy v. Louisana (Expansion of the Death Penalty). [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

Senate Democrats want to fight Trump’s Supreme Court pick — if they can stick together

(Worthy News) – Senate Democratic leaders pulled a page from the GOP playbook Thursday, quickly proclaiming they’d oppose all of President Trump’s nominees to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy until after the midterms.

“I can tell you we’re four months away from an election where the American people will decide the majority in the United States Senate,” said Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill. “Following the tortured logic of Mitch McConnell, let’s let the American people speak.”

There shouldn’t be a vote on any nominee, Democrats said, until voters have had a say in the November election, which could determine control of the Senate. Though Senate Democratic leaders, most of their caucus, and the party’s restless base are eager to rumble with Republicans over the vacancy, they have no tools to block Trump’s pick. Republicans see ticket to midterm election success in Kennedy’s retirement

(Worthy News) – Republicans searching for that elusive issue to erase the Democrats’ critical edge in voter enthusiasm heading into the midterm elections believe they’ve found their golden ticket in the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Senior Republicans are predicting that the opportunity to replace Kennedy, a swing vote on the narrowly divided high court, with a young conservative who could tilt the court to the right and serve for decades, will galvanize the conservative base and motivate rank-and-file GOP voters to put any uneasiness with President Trump aside and stick with the party in November.

“This is every Democrat candidate’s worst nightmare, as it changes the game on turnout,” Republican pollster Chris Wilson told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday. “It doesn’t just close the enthusiasm gap, it injects rocket fuel into the evangelical base that helped Trump win swing states.” [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More…) ]

House slams door on GOP immigration bill; Trump’s support not enough to pass bill

(Worthy News) – The Republican compromise immigration bill suffered a crushing defeat in the House on Wednesday in a vote that stood as a rebuke to President Trump and a signal that Republicans remain irrevocably deadlocked on the issue.

The bill was supposed to be Republican leaders’ ante in the debate, mixing a narrow pathway to citizenship for some illegal immigrants with faster deportations, new limits on legal immigration and funding for Mr. Trump’s border wall. The president gave it a stamp of approval just hours before the vote, calling it “strong but fair.”

But nearly half of House Republicans abandoned the bill and joined Democrats to defeat it in an embarrassingly lopsided 301-121 vote. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

Retirement ends Anthony Kennedy’s tenure as nation’s decider-in-chief

(Worthy News) – Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, the 81-year-old jurist, who announced his retirement Wednesday, has been the decider in chief on most of the major controversial cases to reach the Supreme Court ever since 2006, which was when the court’s balance shifted to him after Sandra Day O’Connor’s retirement.

Declaring a national right to same-sex marriage? Justice Kennedy was the tie-breaker, delivering the landmark win for gay rights.

Affirming affirmative action’s role on college campuses? He wrote that opinion in 2016.

Shaping the counters of abortion law, approving President Trump’s powers to enact the travel ban and creating the modern freewheeling campaigns dominated by a wall of television ads — Justice Kennedy was the pivotal vote in each of those cases. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

The details will be made public Thursday, according to Kremlin officials, but the meeting is expected to take place after the NATO summit in mid-July in Brussels. [ Source: Washington Times (Read More…) ]

No more sending Bibles across the border to North Korea in balloons, says South Korea

(Worthy News) – One consequence of the ongoing peace initiatives between South Korea and the US with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been the ban on balloon launches for Christian ministries, who used the tactic to send leaflets and Gospel messages to North Koreans.

Eric Foley with Voice of the Martyrs Korea explained that despite 12 years of efforts launching balloons into North Korea, the South Korean government has now banned ministries from continuing with such efforts.

Foley told Mission Network News on Monday that essentially, South Korea does not want to upset its northern neighbor and endanger the peace talks. [ Source: Christian Today (Read More…) ]
